    An embarrassingly basic question

Can a hero attack while exhausted? I just read that in the Dark Portal rule book.

We've played for a couple of months and  we've always played that an exhausted hero can't attack (similar to an ally).

What's the point of a card that will exhaust a hero (e.g. Eye of the Storm) if the hero can still attack while exhausted? Or can it only defend?

    Thanks!

Nope, heroes are required to exhaust in order to attack, just like allies. They can strike with a weapon while exhausted though, which may have been what you read.

    That's interesting.

I see now that a hero can attack like an ally but it doesn't (at least mine) have an attack value.
    But it can still attack.
This is different than striking with a weapon.
    Thank you!

If you have a moment......what is an example of a hero that can attack?

    Re: An embarrassingly basic question

The only requirement to attack with a hero is that they are ready, and that they have something they can attack. You could attack with your hero on turn 1 before any cards are played. But, like you pointed out, most heroes have an ATK of 0(undefined numbers are treated as 0) so that won't do much good. Striking with a weapon increases your hero's ATK by the ATK of the weapon.

Wait, I'm tired, did that answer your question?

Well... I was thinking of a specific example for a specific hero but yes you cleared it up for me. Thanks!

    Re: An embarrassingly basic question

There are no (unflipped) heroes that have passive attack values. Emmi Sprinklestrike has 1 attack after you flip her and illidan (master hero) has 5 atk but costs 11 and can only be played by traitors. A hero must be able to exhaust to attack but doesn't necessarily need a weapon to strike with. If there is a benefit of attacking even without a weapon, the hero can still attack.

This is definitely a core concept which all players should become aware of...

Backlash can also be exploited by running your hero into 1 ATK guys for a free draw guaranteed.

    Re: An embarrassingly basic question

There are also abilities like Taunt, Taunting Blows and Mocking Blow that can force your opponent to attack your hero with his/her hero (if their hero is able/ready) even if they have 0 ATK. This allowes you to strike in defence with a weapon or divert their hero's attack away from one of your allies.

    Re: An embarrassingly basic question

Now i got a question regarding the gladiator's spellblade. It is printed:

At the start of your turn, put a spell counter on Gladiator's Spellblade. If your hero would deal damage, it deals that much +1 for each Spellblade counter instead.

so, in lieu of this, can I attack with my hero, without paying the cost of the weapon and without exhausting the weapon, and deal the amount of damage printed on the weapon?

For example, i have 5 counters on the spellblade. Can i attack with my hero for 0 and add 5 to that attack, without using my spellblade, and without paying 5?

My argument is, since it is printed zero damage on the spellblade anyway. Even if i pay 5, my hero would be dealing 0 damage and add 5 to that attack, and exhausting my spellblade.

    Re: An embarrassingly basic question

Gladiator's Spellblade has what is known as a replacement modifier, which replaces a packet of damage by increasing its size.  A packet of 0 damage is not created and does not exist, thus there is nothing to actually replace for the replacement modifier to effect.  So if you attack with your hero and it would deal 0 combat damage, Gladiator's Spellblade would do nothing and no damage would be dealt.

So wait, just for further clarification on this- during your turn, your exhausted hero can't strike with a ready weapon since he's already exhausted and can't attack, right?  I've only been playing for a few weeks now, but we've been understanding the rules as an exhausted hero can only strike with a readied weapon if he is defending.

Of course your exhausted hero can strike with a ready weapon. Whenever your hero attacks something it will be exhausted at the point where you strike with your weapon...
The only requirements for striking with a weapon are
    a) The weapon is ready
    b) You can pay the costs
    c) Your hero is in combat

That's basically correct, but let me explain why.

First, striking with a weapon doesn't actually deal any damage. The only thing it does is raise your hero's ATK value. The vast majority of heroes start off with an ATK of 0. So, if a hero attacks and does nothing to raise their ATK value, they will deal 0 damage. Striking with a weapon is one of the ways of raising your hero's ATK.

Second, you can only strike with a weapon inside of a combat (the Defend window to be specific). On your turn, the only way to get into combat is to attack. So, on your own turn, your hero has to be ready in order to attack and get into combat. Then, once inside the combat step, you can choose to strike with a weapon.

If your hero is defending during your opponent's turn, then your opponent has done the work to initiate the combat. Since your hero is in combat, you can strike with a weapon. It doesn't matter if your hero is ready or exhausted.
