I’ve got so many consecutive second place finishes that I’m starting to feel like the official “end boss” for World of Warcraft TCG Tournaments!

Re: Tools of the Trade - Fishing For a Win

two I play Gromble + Stab; turn three I play Detect Traps, and he responds with Backlash. He readies into Adam (off the top, so lucky

I think you played wrong here.   In this matchup, you have to assume the warlock has backlash... Playing a low cost ally (ie gromble) just so you can go turn 3 detect traps/4 victimize doesnt seem right... You know he is going to play backlash on turn 2, so why give him 2 free cards for 2 damage by playing an ally?.  I play stab on 2 to get the adam, then turn 4 traps, turn 5 victimize...

    Edit:

Game two he gets Backlash going really early, drawing cards off my Gromble that he keeps attacking into

Looks like you lost another match to the same mistake.  Poor Phil.

Re: Tools of the Trade - Fishing For a Win

One thing that got lost in the translation there is that when i played the gromble that g2, i had already stabbed him and seen no backlash, so i thought the coast was clear (which it was, before he drew the backlash).  Every other game at the RCQ i played around backlash to a rediculous degree.

Phil, so whats your verdict on Hope Ender?

Works in a Taunt deck, that'd be about it.

And Quakelord Razak is the Tauren racial ally, not ALAMO. Your articles are pretty amazing, I think you hit every base this time - evolution of card bases in Block format, Gyro version 1 + evidence, Gyro version 2 + evidence.

It was pretty good, not sure if its better than bonecracker in this deck, but it was certainly better than truncheon.  Two strike cost is bad times for 5drop.dec

Game three, he gets out ahead early, using Bladehands to turn down Eye of the Storm and a quest. Eventually he gets another Weldon protecting his health total, while I again sit and stare at him with Hope Ender. Him killing my Eye of the Storm is a huge issue as the only ways I have to beat Weldon here are Slash and Dash and Deadliness, both of which are in my hand.

All evidence clearly points to Truncheon being awful.

Re: Tools of the Trade - Fishing For a Win

My current version of Gyro includes Thuds and Blackout Truncheon. Primarily for the instant exhaust effects. Which enable Slash and Dash as well as Deadliness. Thud might actually help you pretty good. It can lock down Eye of the Storm as well as Backlash if need be. Great setup card for Deadliness.

What I'm working on is more combo/finishing ability oriented. Kidney Shot, Deathblow and Surge of Adrenaline along with combo moves like Slay the Feeble, Slash and Dash and Thud. Carnage wasn't really needed, so I cut it.

I'm not sure my deck can hold up to a full-out WoTF deck, because alot of the removal is direct. What are your experiences with WoTF? Do you basically rely on your allies/hero to take them out?

Re: Tools of the Trade - Fishing For a Win

Why lose the synergy between Deadliness and Blackout Truncheon for another weapon?

Also it seems to me that you got unlucky against the lock matchup where EotS is critical, and you have more ways to deal with EotS (Bladehands + Deadliness).

What's your thoughts on Woodsie? (from the other article) I think it is a better answer to Backlash than Pappy.

I've even had some success running Band of Vile Aggression for problem Locations. Its really a card of if you have board presence, you tend to keep it.

The card pool for Rogue is just very deep.

My problem with woodsie is that its not reliable enough.  It is better against backlash than pappy is, i'll agree on that.  I just don't think that the way to beat backlash is to try and kill it, because it will already have gained significant value (1-2 cards) by the time you have an opportunity to kill it.  I would rather fight it with something like ice barbs, or just not allow it to become active until its time for them to die.

The reason i don't like truncheon isn't that i don't like the hoj effect, obviously thats awesome.  the problem i have is that i rarely have two spare resources to actually strike with it, making it less like a weapon than the zero strike cost weapons like hope ender or bonecracker.  There are a ton of expensive effects packed into that gyro deck, and often i wouldn't be able to swing my truncheon for a few turns after i played it -- which makes it much like hope ender, except by the time i get around to swinging hope ender it's matured in value to be the equivalent of a six or seven (or sometimes more) cost weapon.

Re: Tools of the Trade - Fishing For a Win

I agree with Phil on woodsie. I ran 4 of her on the 29th RQ (list posted in Bryan's article) as I thought pappy wasn't enough removal. Pappy is just tough for decks to deal with. Woodie wrecks feral Druid and the DOT decks that are out there but most other decks wreck those to.

    Pappy is just a monster...

Re: Tools of the Trade - Fishing For a Win

Phil have you thought about tryin a couple Burgles in your sideboard? They are a very powerful card especially in a deck like Gyro thats constantly tossing down threats. By the time turn 7 hits they'll have a board presence or youll be winning. In that case you steal it, and potentially the win.

Also, if you do opt to try out bone cracker you could always remodel your quest line up to include In Defence of Halaa which will speed up eye of the storm too.

You do realize that you can play Slash and Dash just for the stealth (and then crush in to Weldon or the hero), dontcha?
