Tools of the Trade - A Taste of Honor - Part 1

Tools of the Trade - A Taste of Honor - Part 1
    By Phil Cape

I’m going to try to cover the whole Fields of Honor spoiler, highlighting what I feel are the most impactful cards, and sprinkling deck lists (or deck fragments) along the way.

    80 Horde Priest - Tichondrius
    80 Alliance Rogue - Icecrown

Re: Tools of the Trade - A Taste of Honor - Part 1

Phil - I think you missed the button with Blessing of Kings.  It's still pretty solid, even when all your playing is Doshura/Johnny/Vex/Bhenn/Tatulla/Random 8+ cost dudes to finish.  They still make super favorable trades, which is what you wanted them there for anyway.  You can still play Concentration Aura, which makes it like a EOT turn 5 Gift of the Wild...seems pretty good to me.  Yes you lose Holy Shock, but it's still pretty slick.

I do agree that Mists is rather lackluster most times.  I've seen it played against me a lot on MWS and more often than not it's coming up pay 1 I discard a card, and smash you still.  No board parity or semblance of tempo really.

Shaman - I think you missed Hatchet Totem entirely.  It's pretty good as a pay 3 deal 4 to something, with a threat still remaining.  It's like Lightning Bolt every turn if it isn't dealt with.

Backlash is pretty decent as well.  Against any deck that does combat damage, it's pay 2 draw a card at the VERY minimum.  If it remains on the field, the flood of card advantage is wide open.

Warrior - Overpower...I read this card and thought, man that really is OVERPOWERed.  I would like to see what if anything you've done with the card.  6-cost seems steep, but it really does quite a bit against a lot of decks that aim to use anything on your turn.  I see the Victoria Jaton - Vindicator Gauntlets deck making a comeback though.  All those new Attachments seem quite slick for that.

The rest was pretty spot on.  Good work!

Sorry Phil, your Hunter "core" is almost completely worthless, as you are overseeing the most important card that deck gained from FoH. Hell, you are even building it Alliance and not including it...where is Gromble? It's an easy 4-of in that deck :).

Re: Tools of the Trade - A Taste of Honor - Part 1

Nice article Phil, it really gives us some food for thought on new decks to make.  In my experience with Mist of Corrosion on MWS, I think it really excells against decks that play Equipment finishers.  I mean, if a Plague throws down a Voidfire, is he really going to discard an armor or a Seer's Signet that could be used on Divine Spirit etc?    It really punishes people for throwing in just a couple of 1 card type.  If the new Feral Druid has an ALAMO down, can he afford to ditch that Snig?  I agree in some situations it is lackluster but in others it excels.

I really think you touched on most of the key cards in the set that will make an impact.

I think that you Leonard have as much of a chance of having a sexual relationship with Penny as the Hubble telescope does of discovering at the center of every black hole is a little man with a flashlight searching for a circuit breaker.

The article wasn't intended to be a two parter, it was just really long.  Sorry, sometimes i ramble.  Yeah, i talk about Gromble in "part two" although not in the context of that deck specifically.  In fact, i hadn't thought of (what i think is) the interaction you are referring to.  So if i have gromble in play along with a free strike weapon (say blackcrow with RWS), and i play rapid fire... i just combo off, right?  Like, attack, strike, pay1 to ready hero and weapon, strike, exhaust hero to ready both, strike, etc... right?  Pretty cool!  I hadn't thought of that interaction specifically, despite spending hours thinking about how awesome gromble seemed.

yeah.. its a fragile combo for sure, but if you already have 2/3 parts int he deck, might as well add the 3rd.

How is celestial shard working out for you?  Is it overcosted?

Re: Tools of the Trade - A Taste of Honor - Part 1

its actually been pretty good.  Not as good as i had hoped it would be, but its nearly a moonfire in a deck that really leans hard on drawing moonfire.  I really like that it can clean up random idiot allies, once you reach a certain point in the game you stop having to spend cards on killing thier stuff and just have to spend resources.

The direct comparison is Stormfire, since that card does basically the same thing and would probably be in that slot if i wasn't playing Shard.  In that vein, i like shard because it can keep doing its thing forever.  I tend to get squeamish about running out of win conditions though, so i like having another way to recur burn aside form moonfire spam.

Also, i've added 2x Bloodsea Brigand's Vest to the maindeck since i wrote this.  I can't remember what i took out but i know i don't miss it.  :)

Re: Tools of the Trade - A Taste of Honor - Part 1

I know Mist of Corrosion is sometimes just going to be 1-cost discard, but I still think its a necessity as one of control Priest's only answers to certain threats, like equipment and untargettable allies. As long as you can reliably run your opponent out of cards, or close to it, it seems more than fine, especially in a deck with Searing Light.

Great article, as always, looking forward to part 2.

    Phil,

When you mention Gromble the Apt, please talk about him in the context of Black Ice getting Myriam out turn 3.

    Cheers.

Phil, bows hunters have a great turn 1 which is called "Eye of Rend" : )

    ~

Best ranking at weekly draft : 4th (5 showed up and I got a bye :D)
Number of weekly drafts : 44 and counting.
0-4 drop at worlds (pairings suck)
Once won a game in DMF, my opponent didn't show up.

Eye of rend is terrible in hunter combo.

It doest help you survive vs aggro, and if you are going for an "infinite combo" the 1 extra damage per swing is irrelevant.

Re: Tools of the Trade - A Taste of Honor - Part 1

That hunter combo seems very intriguing. I'm going to have to try that out.

Good article overall Phil. Throws out a lot of ideas revolving around (what I feel was) the strongest aspect of Fields of Honor: class cards.

The Katianna/NewRenew synergy seems really aggravating to play against as well. That looks like quite the time-buyer against any aggro deck, although I'm not sold on Clarity of Thought or Benediction, even if they are draw engines.
