Mages have long had access to an unsung card: World in Flames. And with the renewed hype surrounding Mage in Hunt for Illidan, I think the Heroes of Azeroth rare deserves a second look.

It seems like there's so much ongoing ability hate out there right now, that expensive ongoings aren't really worth playing. Not to mention Crackling Purge; against Shaman, this card gets rowed...

Re: One Card at a Time: World in Flames

I tried really hard to make this work around the time SOB came out, and it just doesn't work.

Any card that requires an investment as high as 8 resources should have an immediate effect on the game state, not require the next turn to come into effect. I was extremely annoyed when shaman got a much better card at a cheaper cost in Elemental Precision, although it is restricted to Elemental talent specs.

But in the end, that has been the story with mage for a long time up until HFI, and printing two amazingly great Talent cards doesn't fix these holes overnight. They just create a space where all mage decks revolve around Water Elemental or Blast Wave/Dragon's Breath.

Re: One Card at a Time: World in Flames

Yeah it doesn't really seem usable, no matter how hard the author wants it to be, in any potent deck.

It's a shame. If it were printed at a lower cost with a drawback, or a comes-into-play effect. . . anything, it might be usable.

It would suffice as the game-ending card it's supposed to be, for example, if you also "Draw a card whenever your hero deals fire damage.", or something like that, but obviously it's far too late for that.

Re: One Card at a Time: World in Flames

I would like to take this opportunity to point out the many counters mages have, ability hate from abilities is easily avoided if you have the proper tools, and mages seem to have plenty... also, one card the author may have overlooked is quagmirron's eye, same cost as the cuffs, but with an ongoing effect instead of a once per turn exhaust to use... granted however, this does not stop ally and equipment based ability destruct, but it can help keep your flames burning for a turn or two....

Smoke or Croak can't burn allies!

Re: One Card at a Time: World in Flames

So, you want to hold back resources to prevent World in Flames hate when you drop it. A minimum of a Fizzle, meaning you aren't dropping this till turn 9 with two cards in your hand and passing the turn without being able to do anything else...all so you can do 0 damage, kill 0 creatures, and have 0 effect on the game state. Your hole plan is to hopefully wreck havok on turn 10...

Compare that with something like the Greench on turn 9, and world in flames almost always loses. Trust me, I've tried to make it work, and its either dead in your hand or a win more card.  Momentum shift it isn't, and that's exactly what it needs to be for 8 resources.

Re: One Card at a Time: World in Flames

Apparently you didn't understand me....... you get the cuffs and 2 eyes on the field and you can have it out turn 6, and ideally you should also be able to have a couple of pyres or fireballs on your opponent, I have seen it work and made it work myself, it is all a matter of effective use of deck space..... also, if you are playing alliance, there is an ally that costs 1 or 2 resources exausts to make your next ability cost 1 less, so just dismissing this card out of hand because it costs 8 is a mistake. It's the same strategy a friend of mine used to get a thundering footsteps off on turn 4.

Wait, are we talking about casual decks here? Or tournament-worthy decks?
