Regional July 19th - Imp Lord Pinprik (1st)

I'm usually not big on writing tournament reports, as i find that their usually pretty predictable, with only a few unexpected results. Very rarely do i run into a tournament report about an interesting deck as opposed to interesting matchups. It's because of how unique and intesting this deck is, and how many questions i get about it that I'm willing to write a report about it
Well I think I've put off the decklist for long enough, and i know that anything beyond a small paragraph that gets written before the decklist is probably going to be skipped over anyway. Well here goes.

        Hero: Imp Lord Pinprik

        Allies
        4 Waz' luk
        4 Routeen
        4 Anders Blankheart
        4 Brodien
        3 Dread Infernal

        Spells
        4 Scorch
        4 Blistering Fire
        4 Immolate
        4 Flame Shock
        4 Incinderate
        4 Fel Fire
        3 Magma Spike

        Quests
        4 Orders from Lady Vashj
        4 Forces of Jaedenar
        3 A Warm Welcome
        3 The Blood is Life

        Sideboard
        1 The Blood is Life
        1 Infernal
        4 Fireball
        4 Fireblast

Well this deserves some explination. The deck is built to be burn with creatures. I tried to stay away from DoTs because most decks tend to need a lot of time to find the few cards in their decks that kill Pinprik. The few dots in the deck, Felfire and Flame Shock are there to go well with Ander's Blankheart. While Ander's is generally a sub par creature, any burn spells they spend killing allies is perfectly fine. Brodian is there to be a Elusive for the same reasons. Pinprick naturally draws the fire pretty much every burn spell, making elusive pretty imbalanced
The Blood is Life has to be my favorite card in this deck. Pinprik's low health is what makes him balanced, and most decks have no means of dealing 12-16 damage. Scorch is taken over Fireblast because it makes A warm welcome much much faster. Turn 4 Scorch to Incinerate is much better than turn 5. It's dififcult to explain, but being that much faster ended up being worth it in quite a few circumstances, and i didnt often run into situations when 1 damage would have made much more of a difference, as killing creatures isnt a main concern for an elusive hero. The nukes are in the sideboard for the few decks that were able to heal or prevent enough damage in the early game. I expected a lot of warrior control, so i wanted some extra burn in those matchups.
Well time to get into the matchups. The tournament was six rounds with a cut to top eight. Some of these will be rather short discriptions, as a decks just dont have the nuke power to deal with Pinprik

Round 1: Alexander Donovan (Pally Control)

I hadn't had breakfast so this was a welcome round 1. I've played with Alex before and he knew that his prot pally control deck wasnt going to be able to win the game under any circumstances with its lack of burn spells. I haven't ever had a whole hour to myself at a regional, and I've got to say, its very boring, and no one is finished with their matches. I wouldnt recomend Pinprik to anyone who isn't ok with sitting around for enlongated periods of time after certain rounds

        Round 2: Jeff D ( Traitor Warrior Control )

Also a good matchup for Pinprik. No Myriam Starcaller means that there's very little to worry about. We played it out, but Intercepts and Shield Bash just arent very good at getting there, especially when the Pinprik can heal

Round 3: Brandon Huberdozer (Blue Shaman Rush)

Well now i had finally run into something either blue or capable of nuking me. Game 1 was pretty rough. I started out with turn 1 Wazluk, turn 2 anders into turn 3 felfire, but it was still pretty rough. A Lightning arc was pretty painful, and for 2 mana Brandon had taken away 1/8th of my health and 2 creatures, seems pretty imbalanced. I was on the play and landed a turn 4 Untargetable Brodian so that i could have an answer for Myriam should he play it, and so that i didnt get caught by Elements Fury. Huber Landed the Myriam with an antikron on board and tried to get it to stick. I got off a Scorch Incinerate Warm welcome, and used a second scorch on Antikron, then killed Myriam.I burned him down shortly thereafter with the constant stream of burn i recieved off of Warm Welcomes and Orders. Game 2 Huber got no Myriam and just burn. He scooped after i used Blood of Life on Two diffent fatties.

        Round 4: Style O'Ginty (Pinprik)

This was my favorite matchup all day. I won the die roll and essentially the match because of it, provided i drew some burn. I did in game one and lucksacked three Blistering fires in the span of my first two turns. Game two he paid me back with Blistering Fire x2 and Fireblast. Game 3 i got no blistering fires, and he got two, but i also got two scorches, nuff said.

Round 5: Kamina Simon (Fire Mage Agro)

I was pretty convinced that I was screwed over for the purposes of this matchup. Dragon's breath ment instant death from creatures, and Blast wave, supernova, and possibly Fireblast were all bad omens as well, and much faster than my threats. I was right in short, and got burned out by his weaker burn spells but higher life total

        Round 6: Joel F (Obliveron)

This wasn't going to be a horrible matchup, or at least I didn't think it was. I scooped the match so that i could let Joel into the top 8, as i felt like it improved my odds at a regonal win. I also hadn't gotten to eat lunch, so it seemed like a good time to get that stuff done before the top 8

        Quarter Finals

        Patches McGee (Paladin Agro)

This was pretty much a slaughter matchup, the only card in his deck that could touch me was holy shock, and while he usually drew two of them, i was always able to blood is life for enough to make it so that he would need to hit all four of his shocks to win.

        Semi Finals

        Joel F (Obliveron)

Asside from the few demons that deal fire damage when they come into play, Joel didnt have much to deal with my hero. Between the Blood is life and holding mana open for infernal, i eventually took this match with not much difficulty

        Style O'Ginty (Pinprik)

Style and I decided to split rather than have the kind of match we had had during the tournament, it seemed kind of silly to coin flip, The ea went to a mutual friend and we split the rest down the middle.

So anyway, thats how my regional with Pinprik went. The Blood is Life may have finally found a home in a competitive deck. A lot of decks just cant touch Pinprick, and the few that can barely whittle him down are ruled out by this amazing peice of utility on a resource. Anywho, while the build could use a small amount of tweaking, i would say that my experience with Pinprik was by and large very entertaining and sucessful.  I hope some of you guys decide to pick up Pinprik sometime as well based on what i wrote here.

If thats true, then there were 2 Pinprik decks in the top 8.

Re: Regional July 19th - Imp Lord Pinprik (1st)

Great report, I hope you post more! Grats on your wins and honorable split for first. I've tried a Pinprick at one small battleground with 4 people and i only got 1 win. It was 2 mages, 1 obliveron, 1 warrior. It's a really rough match up with fire mages. I don't think pinprick would've survived very long in the Irvine regional. But I think what you guys did that day with the Pinprick wins is defintly going to nudge the meta. People all over are going think twice about not putting in something to deal with Pinprick. :)

Wow, nice list for Pinprik. Congrats on a first. I'll be honest, I totally thought that Pinprik was NEVER going to take a first ANYwhere. I guess I was wrong. I do like the Anders to pump the DoT damage. I'm assuming the leet plays were when you Blood is Life your Brodien back to half life/full. Might as well be lay on hands!!! Thank god someone is posting reports this good. Now I can have some test material/decks for my regionals. Thanks mate!

It blew me away.  Even as a Shaman I made like all the right plays and it seemed uphill.

    Grats man.

One of the best things about this deck is it's 6 cards from being Lazy Peon.

    All I can say:
    Well done.

It doesn't even need A Warm Welcome. I'd say the Dread Infernal is necessary though.

Why is dread infernal necessary? Or even useful for that matter in a pinprik deck? I must be missing something.

Go ahead and playtest with this list, because the power level of this deck is quite deceptive. I'm shocked on how things have turned out.

For the same reason rush decks run Myriam... you put so much pressure on your opponent to deal with your early onslaught that they rarely have anything left when you drop a game-ender on them. Infernal is an efficient and brutal beater. At his worst, he deals 2 to your opponent's entire board and makes them use removal to kill him. At his best, he'll take out a Myriam and then take out your opponent.
