looking for an old magic deck list

a loooong time ago there was a blue red control deck, this was counter control with a little burn

can anyone at all remember the decklist or know where i can find it?

what does this have to do with wow? im going to try and model a mage deck off it.

will it work? probably not, but considering the mechanics, it may....just....work....

Re: looking for an old magic deck list

There have been two types of UR control decks in Magic the Gathering.

One is the counterhammer or counterpheonix strategy wherein a deck packed with cheap counters and cheap burn stall the game until their namesake (Hammer of Bogandaran or Shard Phoenix) comes online.  The brilliance of the strategy was the recurrable nature of these spells.  The kill was slow as molasses but the deck itself was rather resilient.  It was essentially half lands half spells with 2-3 of their kill cards.

What made the deck work was Whispers of the Muse.  This card, due to its buyback ability (Which allows you to put the card back into your hand instead of into the graveyard when you cast it) was their card drawing powerhouse.  It drew 1 card a cast, but over the course of 15-20 turns it would overwhelm the opponent with its card advantage.  The initial Red Pally decks took this route of victory depending on Blessing of Wisdom the same way the Magic deck depended on Whispers of the Muse.  While the Red Pally didn't have the "recurring" element of the old deck, it sometimes felt that way because even though they would run Chasing A-Me 01, they would only use it to recur their Tewa Wildmane.

The other deck was similar.  It was a UR Izzit Deck.  The main difference between this and counterhammer/counterpheonix was that this deck did not contain the "recurring" nature of the previous deck.  More a combination of effient burn, countermagic and card drawing, it would eventually play large flying creatures and protect it.

I'm pretty certain that the Izzit deck has other things about it that is awesome, but I honestly don't recall.  If someone could lend me a helping hand here?

If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing. And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order.

Re: looking for an old magic deck list

It's a little vague, from what he's said. We need a little more information, to go on, than an old Magic deck, that played counters, and burn.

That being said, I can think of a few.

Counterphoenix, as mentioned above, saw some play, through various periods. Most recently, it was played in Kami-Rav Standard, but was not very popular, and it was quickly outclassed, as far as I'm aware.

UR decks rose after that last incarnation of Counterphoenix, and took two main forms, that I know of. There was the IzzetSpike combo deck, that combo'd off with Izzet Guildmage, and used earlygame counterspells, to protect it, although it was never much more than a casual-ish combo-deck.

Then, there was HanzoTron, which saw play in multiple high-level events, and became a tier-part of T2, for a while. It used the Urzatron lands, Signets, Top, and various acceleration, to fuel late-game bombs, like Godo, Meloku, and Keiga, while using efficent counters, and burn, like Remand and Electrolyze.

Beyond that....Angelfire? That was a URW control deck, that used Firemane Angel, Lightning Helix, Electrolyze, and things like Remand, in conjunction with Zur's Weirding.

Anything past that, or really before that, I'd have no idea on, though. If you could give us some more information, as to the timeframe, the format, and what was legal, at the time, I'm sure we could do a lot more, to find the deck you're asking about.

    That's Randy Buehler's Counter-Phoenix

& that's one that uses Whispers instead of Capsize.

    Slightly different in their play

Maybe some variaton of Ur fish, cheap counters, effective creatures, some burn (fire/ice and lightning bolt??) and some silver bullets (null rods, crypts and such) ?

    Ah- that version.
Yes, I did see a couple of cards & think about the Efreet & phasing. I don't think it can quite be done well enough yet

I was attempting to imply that it Twinblade of the Phoenix could be the Shard Pheonix / Hammer of Bogandaran / Frentic Efreet of your UR WoW deck.  I was also attempting to suggest that since Warrior already has burn and interrupts up the wazoo, that maybe you could start from there.

Maybe I should have been less subtle...

no no, i understand where you are going, but i dont see that warrior has a superior amount of "counters" when compared to mage including all the aoe that mages have.

Re: looking for an old magic deck list

I think Mage is the right place to start & possibly Undead for Cannibalize usage or Belf for Solanian's
I was looking for a Stalking Stones equivalent- all I can think of off the top of my head is Arcanite Dragonling...but that's slightly too vulnerable

*cough* Are We There Yeti *Cough*

Also, if you choose undead, you can use BOTH Cannibalize AND Undercity for healing madness :)

A resilient nuke+counter heavy Mage deck that plans on dropping its win condition around turns 15-20, that's what I'd like to call ehpihc.

Re: looking for an old magic deck list

Doesn't really do the same thing
Need something that can be repetitively turned into a creature rather than a one-off effect. A quest or Location would be ideal as there's fewer ways of dealing with it (although against that is Skumm being played a lot at the moment)
