    1386184:

    Hi All,

We're going to errata as Pokute suggests.

    ...

    But for serious...

This card is certainly not without confusion, and it sounds like the FAQ entry could be working a little harder to alleviate said confusion. The updated entry will be as follows:

Ready opposing heroes and allies don’t “become exhausted” as Shadowstep enters play, nor do characters that enter play ready under an opponent’s control while Shadowstep is in play. In the following sentences, you control Shadowstep and “affected character” means “ready opposing hero or ally.”

    ·         An affected character can be targeted as though it were exhausted (or ready). It will also be destroyed by cards like Slaughter from the Shadows. In addition, an affected character will increase the ATK of cards like Barman Shanker and Captain Swash, where applicable.

    ·         An affected character can still attack, activate, or otherwise be exhausted (and it will turn sideways as usual). As it does so, it “becomes exhausted.”

    ·         An affected character can’t be readied because only (physically) exhausted cards can be readied. Similarly, it can’t be inspired because you can’t choose to inspire a ready card.

We'll also insert the word "physically" into a couple of rules to make it super-clear what's going on:

105.1 Cards enter play ready and stay ready until exhausted. To exhaust a ready card, turn it sideways. To ready an exhausted card, turn it upright. Only physically ready cards can be exhausted, and only physically exhausted cards can be readied. A card readies only if it physically transitions from exhausted to ready, and exhausts only if it physically transitions from ready to exhausted. Whether a card is ready or exhausted is part of its orientation.

501.1a As a ready step starts, the turn player readies all physically exhausted cards in play he or she controls. Any modifiers created “as [that turn] starts” are also created simultaneously. None of this uses the chain. Next, a priority window opens. As that window closes, the ready step ends.

    Thanks for all contributions,
    PR

Haha... that would be a good errata.  Thank you very much for the clarifications Moorf!

If a character is physically exhausted, and under the effects of Shadowstep, does it still physically ready durring it's controller's ready step?

Yes, Shadowstep doesn't prevent anything from readying.

Dag nabbit, Moorf. Here I was, after reading the CR a few times, ready to come in and weigh in, have some fun arguing subtleties of rules... and you go and ruin it by changing the actual rules. ;) Good job, and really quick. This exact issue was mishandled by AEG with one of their games. I'm glad to see y'all doing a better job.

So, if I explode a judge's head, does he go to his owner's graveyard or to the store graveyard? And what if Eternium Runed Blade is in play? Does he keep walking around without his head? Any penalty for blindness?

aaaaaaaaugh you've only created more questions

    So...

Wastewalker Leggings will not cause 1 damage to characters that are not physically exhausted(just having Shadowstep in play)?

    Correct.

    Re: Shadowstep and Wastewalkers

That is correct.  Wastewalker Leggings only triggers and deals damage to a hero or ally when it becomes exhausted (physically transitions from ready -> exhausted).  Shadowstep does not cause the opposing characters to become exhausted, it merely causes them to become counted as such for the purposes of abilities and powers.
