1968263:is this the worst coverage you guys have read or what? Its 10 PM and I am still waiting for a finals report. The whole weekend as been super slow. The draft coverage dosent explain why someone took one card over another but just shows the picks......
I am sad
Editing takes time, especially across time zones and a power outage on-site affected our ability to send emails for a bit. I'm sure the editors are doing the best they can to get coverage up. That said, the draft coverage generally does do a good job of explaining why someone took something, but usually only when it is not especially obvious. I myself glossed several picks where Bodimer's chocies seemed obvious. If you would like my opinion on why he made any pick expressly stated, feel free to ask me in this thread; I will reply. I cannot of course say I know exactly why he took it, because I am not psychic. But after talking, covering, and drafting with David I think I could offer you the explanation you desire. If you're curious about Billy's I'd be happy to offer my opinion on that too, though both players are much more masterful than myself. That all said, this DMF had one of the shortest finals of all time, roughly twenty minutes, on account of Billy's ridiculous deck.

you have to assume that us noobs understand why things are going on. Kinda of like when you write a paper for school, you have to assume that the person reading it knows nothing.
Would be nice for the reporter to ask questions about the draft while they are building their decks, that would be super helpful in the future.

Was Bodimer's draft in an article somewhere? I only see Postlethwait's.
Anyway, I am a little sad to not see a finals report after everything went up so fast, so I assume one isn't coming, but it still would have been nice to know just how well Kysuke hung in there. (Did anyone catch in the articles how everyone that covered one of Andy's events had to mention -- psst, just so you know, this is Kysuke!)

Reporters must be very careful about the questions asked because the reporter cannot offer any strategy advantages or hints at possible plays, even through questioning. A simple question like, "What did you think of two of X card going around in the draft" could challenge the integrity of the tournament because it would remind a forgetful player about cards to play around. Basically, anything the player gives up individually is fair game, but the reporter cannot ask any probing question that could jeapordize the equality and fairness of the tournament.

Re: Darkmoon Faire Columbus: April 11-13, 2008
I think it would be inappropriate for me to assume that someone reading the coverage of a WoW draft knows nothing about WoW draft; this isn't scholarly journalism. They would have to have a rudimentary understanding of what was going on in order to be reading at all. Otherwise I would be obligated to preface each feature with what a draft was, how it worked, etc. Again, my offer stands to explicate in depth.
Bodimer's draft is now up; I don't know if it was or not when I posted, because I didn't check. The finals was covered but not by me, so I can't help you there.
Will also has a point that certain questions would necessarily disadvantage other players, and it's also an issue that talking with a player within several feet of his opponents could unnecessarily advantage them as well. It is a little trickier than most players think to operate in this arena.

972232:Hey...what was the format for the X-51 Nether Rocket contructed tournament? Was it just regular constructed, or something else?
According to this post, it was constructed with Servants of the Betrayer being legal.

Re: Darkmoon Faire Columbus: April 11-13, 2008
When I mentioned draft coverage, what I meant was to have a writer track each person's draft. Then, when all is said and done, ask the person what the thought process was behind each card. For example, Billy P had drafted a fairly crazy good aggro deck through pack 1 using scryer. When he opened and drafted Ishanah, did he intend to change his entire strategy, or was he drafting it unsure if he was going to play it? Things like that would be more interesting (at least to me) than the play by play of who traded what with whom when.

Re: Darkmoon Faire Columbus: April 11-13, 2008
Markoff played 33 cards, lol. Congratulations to Billy P, much deserved and way to open/draft a ridiculous deck. Don't worry Andy, you'll get 'em next time. -- The coverage was much better than Orlando, still kind of slow but I guess we have to live with that. The only glaring problem with the coverage was no round 8 feature match of Andy and Brad. Covering the only two undefeated players seems like something we might want to read about, just FYI. -- Also, 1473012: When he opened and drafted Ishanah, did
he intend to change his entire strategy, or was he drafting it unsure
if he was going to play it?
He had plenty of time to fill the ranks, and you don't not play Ishanah.

Re: Darkmoon Faire Columbus: April 11-13, 2008
Hey there, first time posting here. Was at the DMF Columbus event this past weekend with 2 off my spawn in tow and was curious as to where to play in columbus. I checked the tournament finder and it comes up nothing except for the realms qualifier. I had lots of fun at DMF and am looking forward attending again (if it comes back). Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

While I can understand your desire, this is impossible. There are two writers at a DMF, and they have enough to do; keeping track of 8 drafters would be wholly implausible without 8 writers. As for the questions, this is typically asked after the draft. Unless the question seems obvious. Given the ridiculousness of Ishanah, I am sure Will considered it a forgeone conclusion that Billy would go for the 8-drop rather than the three average Scryer cards he had, and thus did not emphasize the pick as any sort of "temptation." It was an obvious and lucky open, early enough in a draft that accounting for its presence would be easy. I'm happy to hear suggestions about what people want, but the fact is there is a context. Two writers can only cover two drafters. They do ask them questions. If you would like to see a specific question asked as a general rule, then feel free to post it. I generally make sure to ask about class preference and the moment they choose a class, faction preference and the moment it is chosen, and quests picks in addition to the ramifications of signaling. I think this is relatively comprehensive, but I admittedly have a skewed perspective because these are the subtleties of draft that interest me. I am happy to find more that interest others, but can't just guess them really. And Akugyaku: The undefeated players in the last round never get covered for a variety of reasons. One is that they likely already were covered earlier in the day, which is true here. It shorts the players and readers to feature the same players. The other is that the important final round matches are the bubble matches where Top 8 is on the line. Dreams are made or crushed, etc. These are always the matches covered in the last swiss round, in pretty much every game's coverage reporting. These games are tense; matches between two locks for Top 8 are not.

Re: Darkmoon Faire Columbus: April 11-13, 2008
I'll need to top 8 another event before Glenn will take me seriously and give me my first feature match. :-P
Anyways, I think readers would love to hear about what went right/wrong in the game to give a better insight on the players and the closeness of the game. For example, in the semi with Anthony I could have told you that the MVP of that match was Bogspike. I probably picked both Bogspikes high during the draft and it was well worth the picks.
Another tidbit was that those hunter guns you saw Bodimer passed were my first 2 class picks. Seeing Skyfury Bow after picking Hemet's Elekk Gun made it a no-brainer that I was solidly a hunter.
