I guess if you only intention was to stay in the hotel and play cards it was not that bad.
For the most part, the DMF cities I've been to haven't really had anything that held my interest other than the gaming hall and the possibility of a decent meal within walking distance. San Diego, Columbus (OH), Indianapolis, and Edison, NJ aren't exactly prime vacation spots and the DMF schedules don't often leave a ton of time either, at least if you're doing well. Orlando, while technically a prime vacation spot for a lot of people, doesn't really leave much that you're going to do with a few hours in the evening and Philadelphia was a city I'd already spent more time than I'd like in in the past.
SD was real close to downtown which I thought was pretty enjoyable. Good food, good bars. The stadium was close if you wanted to tour that. Someone posted they went to the SD Zoo which is one of the best zoos in the world.
Indy was not as exciting. I did like going there once and checking out the monument and other building that was close. Was interesting to see the old stadium before it got torn down. The night life was pretty fun and well with in walking distance. Also tons of food options close.
DMF Anaheim was real close to Disney Land. Probably has other stuff I take for granted because I live here being so close to one of the worlds most famous theme parks. No shortage of food (though I feel it is pricey near near Disney Land).
Also all of these areas have cab free for all zones making it cheaper and easier to go to near by places.
Guess if it is a "business trip" for someone all of this may not be appealing as someone is trying to minimize expenses.
Personally I see them as vacations. Usually bring $200-300 to drop on side events and other purchases and another $200-300 to drop on enjoying the town at the min.
