    Re: DMF Las Vegas 09'

    DMF SF location sucked hard.

Never have I been so deep in the middle of a city yet feel like I am in the middle of no where.

The town we were in had some cab law where only certain cab drivers could pick you up.

Only "normal" place to eat with in 20 min walk was Sizzler. Pretty sure I am not the only one to say I will not be eating at sizzler in the near future again. Had a Bday dinner at a nice asian place that was close but the meal and drinks ran me $50.

Cabs to SF cost $60. Apparently the hotel guys in the area demand kick backs from the few cabbies who can pick you up from the area. We got a guys phone number and got around that but it was still $80 round trip.

The first day of the DMF we were pool side in a tent because there was some book convention in the main hall. It was not too bad during the day but when dusk came around it got cold fast. We left the tent as soon as that happened.

As much as it sucked to be there it was probably one of the cheapest places that did not require a costly trip to and from the airport. In fact transportation to and from the airport was quick and free. Also rooms were $130 a night.

I guess if you only intention was to stay in the hotel and play cards it was not that bad.

For the most part, the DMF cities I've been to haven't really had anything that held my interest other than the gaming hall and the possibility of a decent meal within walking distance. San Diego, Columbus (OH), Indianapolis, and Edison, NJ aren't exactly prime vacation spots and the DMF schedules don't often leave a ton of time either, at least if you're doing well. Orlando, while technically a prime vacation spot for a lot of people, doesn't really leave much that you're going to do with a few hours in the evening and Philadelphia was a city I'd already spent more time than I'd like in in the past.

Im sure Tropicana would take them.. sheesh they'd take anyone and have a large hall in the back.  They couldn't be that expensive to rent?.. throw in show tickets to everyone or something just for the business.

SD was real close to downtown which I thought was pretty enjoyable. Good food, good bars. The stadium was close if you wanted to tour that. Someone posted they went to the SD Zoo which is one of the best zoos in the world.

Indy was not as exciting. I did like going there once and checking out the monument and other building that was close. Was interesting to see the old stadium before it got torn down. The night life was pretty fun and well with in walking distance. Also tons of food options close.

DMF Anaheim was real close to Disney Land. Probably has other stuff I take for granted because I live here being so close to one of the worlds most famous theme parks. No shortage of food (though I feel it is pricey near near Disney Land).

Also all of these areas have cab free for all zones making it cheaper and easier to go to near by places.

Guess if it is a "business trip" for someone all of this may not be appealing as someone is trying to minimize expenses.

Personally I see them as vacations. Usually bring $200-300 to drop on side events and other purchases and another $200-300 to drop on enjoying the town at the min.

There was also an El Torito and Elephant Grill about 1/3 of a mile to the north (conveniently next to my hotel) which were pretty good.  On the upper side of your 20 minute criteria, but I think it was still within it.

The one reason I think it sucked was because it missed such a wonderful opportunity to be right in the middle of possibly the best city in the nation. San Franciso is a wonderful place for walking around, seeing the sights, getting great food etc.

Where they held it, it might as well have been on the outskirts of any city in the country.

    Cheers.

    I agree 100% with this.

SF is one of my most favorite towns I have seen. If I ever loose my job I intend on moving there.

DMF SF was not San Francisco by any stretch of the imagination. Burlingame is 20 SOUTH of the city, it was really a shame. Our ncal troop had a blast despite it though.

Looking forward to DMF LV big time, hopefully it won't be a junk location this time.

I'm not going to lie - from a 'take minimal amount of time off of work and spend as little as possible' perspective, the location seemed great.  Close to the airport, relatively inexpensive hotels, etc. and I (personally) didn't have free time to do anything other than tournaments.  It's certainly true that if you wanted to spend more time and do other things than it wasn't great, but for just a tournament I personally think it was fine.

Also note that the earlier location was even further south and was more than an hour by BART/trains away from the airport.

I just wish I at least knew the dates for it because my gf likes bullriding and that is also going to be in Vegas in November.  I know she would come with me if they happened to be on the same weekend.  Either way, wowtcg, casinos, and alcohol sound like a fun weekend!

We are doing final site visits next Tuesday for the three locations on our short list. Two of them are on the strip, and one is one of the good hotel/casinos just off the strip. They aren't downtown or way off in the boonies.

    Vegas is gonna pwn.
I don't expect there'll be a shortage of yarns about that weekend.
