How about we get your associated with a store and you can start getting stuff going there. I mean, you don't want to lose your vendor privledge for DMF Bunklore's Apt. I hope he has a big enough TV for Rock Band.

All that aside, the information in this thread is precisely the feedback that I am looking for.  I have been doing some research and the numbers show that New England might be a potential hotbed for OP events, especially with the number of competitive players that are there. Is there anything else that anyone wants to add?  where is BigTroll?

Btw - When I say New England, I mean east of NY state.

This is great! My wife and I just moved to the Waltham / Lexington(Western Boston) area and would love to find a CCG (besides magic) that was well supported. I would get in touch with either the Whiz in westbourough or Danger planet in Waltham. I think a sealed/draft spectral tiger style event or lazy peon would be the best way to start off. Please keep us informed and I will take my cards out of storage.

We pretty much have no where to play except Somerville, Ma. at Your Move games.   And even this isnt good, I mean Rob runs the tourneys fine...but when you have the same 10 and under people show up everytime, and you drive an hour to play 2 of the friends you playtest against, its not that fun.  Me Jim, Loco(bigtroll) and Derby test before a tourney all the time, then we end up playing each other all day.  The last regional we were at had FIVE people!   Also, the tourneys in Somerville are what, one tourney every few months, there is just nothing close to us at all.  NY stores are much too far, the CT store Kysuke play at is 2 hours away, Danger Planet isnt that bad of a ride, but the last few times we went, there was no sanctioned play, they all wanted to play and test for fun.   Its pretty much gotten to a point where I have been discussing with friends about seriously opening a gaming store to play, maybe in the Worcester area.  I contacted Upper Deck and have gotten the initial info to start this process, just need to get my butt in gear now.  And I would take any help or advice you could give Gwon, thanks!

There are a bunch of stores in the area that hold events.  However many of them don't like holding them anymore because there is no profit to be made.  The host store doesnt get any portion of the enterence fee or any incentive to hold an event at all.  It all goes to the pto for the region.  i'll ask u this...  why should a store hold a torny that will take up all of its space for a day and make its regulars for other games either play in a small corner or outside, when it doesnt make any profit for the event?  There really isnt any good reason i can think of to upset 1 group of regulars to help out another group for nothing in return...  i know of 2-3 stores in our region that would hold events if there was some kind of incentive for them to....in other words any kind of profit at all.

if you guys could work with the pto in the region and maybe come up with something, i know we could increase the player base around here.

Best ranking at weekly draft : 4th (5 showed up and I got a bye :D)
Number of weekly drafts : 44 and counting.
0-4 drop at worlds (pairings suck)
Once won a game in DMF, my opponent didn't show up.

The last regional held had seven people show up, with the seventh showing up midway through round 1 (which was delayed another 30 minutes because half the people had Hunt for Illidan cards in their decks). It would have been nice to make another final, but MANTIS felt like pairing me against Joe (with me losing basically to die roll), then punishing me by pairing me down in the final round...

I don't think it was helpful that only 3 teams participated in the Smash and Bash (though that was two less than the one that Cheatyface won).

Tony, I would be thrilled if you guys could get something going in Worcester.  I want to be prepared for Continentals as much as possible and getting events going would help immensely.

We had four teams in Brooklyn, though New York's not exactly a hotbed of players either. In general, from the various reports I've seen, most of the Smash 'n Bashes drew 3-6 teams.

I don't think it was that wise to make virtual/MMO prizes for a tcg game - I don't think there is as much interest in that sort of crossover as some poeple might think and the turnouts sort of back that up.  Also, it was kinda expensive.

Something that also just came to me was that every summer the New England area is overrun by an event called the New England Challenge.  (It has since grown on to become the North American Continental Challenge for a certain card game M*G*C).  The tournament is run by a local card store where players play in preliminary card tournaments at supporting local card shops at the hopes of making it to the grand tournament held at the host card store.  I think top prize was something like 1-2k.  Perhaps something similar to this can be done?

The North American Challenge usually has a couple dozen stores that hold events, whereas Realms really had three stores with YMG, Kings Games, and the store in Quebec the TOs. I know Rob was talking about potentially starting something (it seems that everything is all talk up here and nothing else), but he couldn't offer things like the Spectral Tiger loot and such.  I don't know about UDE's policy on cash prizes, but if tournaments could be held with such prizes (and not just packs or loot which don't appeal to everyone), I could see some interest.

Of course, a Dream Machine Championship in Boston... err wherever place that YMG can find to hold the event... wouldn't hurt either.

Honestly.. UDE should just hold a DMF in Boston (assuming they can get the judges and TOs for it)... Its a city ive always wanted to visit, and it could really spark the community there.

As for matts responce.  The store SHOULD make profit whenever it hosts a WoW Tcg Event.  I know every event I attend, I have to buy new sleeves, or pick up new singles.  If the store didnt run any events, I wouldnt bother buying the supplies.
