Booster drafting and Heroes from a TO prespective.

I understand that any heroes opened by drafters in the 3/4 packs they open are passed in.  I also realize that TO's are to provide the drafters with the heroes they need to play the deck they have drafted.

I would love to hear from other TO's on a few minor points:

As players are allowed to see the text of all heroes from the sets being used while drafting and building. what is the 'best' way to facilitate this especially during the new sets where the heroes aren't as well known.

As the Heroes are turned in during the drafting process, and the players are allowed to use any hero from the set.  What is the best way to insure you have the proper amount of heroes available to facilitate this process.  Again I can see releases of new sets being more problematic for this process.

Do most TO's even use booster drafts at all, or is constructed just all around easier way to deal with these issues from a TO stand point.

Very interested to hear from others on these topics.  And if I am missing something glarlingly obvious please let me know.  I have just recently taken the TO test and have yet to receive even the beginning kit with UDE player cards.

Re: Booster drafting and Heroes from a TO prespective.

Players are allowed to see the text of all heroes available to use in the tournament during drafting and building. Hero reference sheets for this purpose can be found at:
    http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/community/files/30/default.aspx

If the hero that someone wants to use isn't available, the best thing to do is to have them use a proxy hero but cut out the text of their hero's information from the reference sheet and keep it with the proxy so that there's no confusion over flip powers.

Playing constructed or draft is really up to your local playerbase and what they prefer. Here in New York City, we don't have any regular weekly constructed events but we do have a draft every Monday night because that's what the playerbase here was was interested in doing.

Re: Booster drafting and Heroes from a TO prespective.

As Bunklore pointed out, there are sheets that you can print out that have the stats for each hero. Plus, the latest set (Servants of the Betrayer) includes a little pamphlet with all of the heroes and a quick rundown of the mechanics from the set (Inspire, Sabotage, Traitors).

You'll find that very quickly you'll have more heroes than you know what to do with. But, when a set is first released it can be difficult to get every single one, especially if one hero is more popular than the others. When UDE sent out the release celebration kits to the Battlegrounds stores, they included 2 copies of each hero in the latest set. That helped to relieve some of the pressure.

But, if you don't have enough, you can always make a proxy. A business card or index card can work well. Just write down the basic stats and the flip power and you should be good.

Draft is a great format, especially for players whose collections are rather small. They don't need to bring any cards and they can build their collection while they're playing.

Re: Booster drafting and Heroes from a TO prespective.

For the Servants RELEASE (not prerelease), UDE shipped a package of 2 copies of each hero to every participating store. This should be done with EVERY PRERELEASE and RELEASE event. Nothing stinks worse than getting all pumped up to play, and then have to use a piece of paper as your hero.

UDE really could ship this "hero pack" along with the prerelease packs to the PTOs, and definitely could continue to put them in the release celebration kits.

Traitor Lionar, Fallenstar and Traitor Remba are a pain in the patoot to find no matter where you are (even at a DMF, apparently).

You can just print the text out on sheets of paper and hand it out to players when they are seated at the tables.

    Just use proxies.

Do most TO's even use booster drafts at all, or is constructed just all around easier way to deal with these issues from a TO stand point.

Personally I prefer constructed as it is a cheaper event to run generally. Players might not be able to afford drafts every week.

Aye, Traitor Remba was the only hero I got none of in my 4 boxes of SotB (got one at the store the next day though).  One difference I noticed at the HfI sneak was that I was handing out more of a variety of heroes compared to SotB where everyone just wanted priest and warrior.

Re: Booster drafting and Heroes from a TO prespective.

As a TO and Head Judge, I let the players dictate how we do the events. Most of the times, it is one Raid/Draft/Sealed per month or two, and constructed the rest of the month, so it breaks down to 4 constructed, one pay event.
I also try to keep in mind the age range of my player base and the economy, so if everyone seems a little broke, we skip the one week of pay event (unless dictated by UDE, ie a release celebration).

At the pre-release that I attended, Hunter and Druid were by far the most played classes. When you open 4 packs of HFI, you have a good chance of getting at least 1x Shadow. If the rest of your Hunter stuff is decent, you're all set.

Do you have a Specialist for your store?  They may be able to assist in acquiring/providing extra heroes.

    Michael,
If you are meaning demo team specialist for the store.. well... that would be me as well.  I seem to be in a totally virgin area.  NW ohio has no stores and such as of yet.  I am working with two of the stores to try to get battle ground status and move forward.  *wish me luck*.  And I know one of the two is eagerly moving forward.  Now to get the word out, as i KNOW there are WoW players out there buying cards.
