  • WoW Minis - First Shot Figures

Some players may have noticed that in addition to everything else players win for Realm Championships November 14-15, the first place prize also includes a "First Shot" figure.

A First Shot is a one-of-a-kind figure. These were the first figures to come off the press when the World of Warcraft Core Set started production. These figures are unpainted and each character only has one "First Shot." This means that each Realm will have its own unique prize added to pot that first place is competing for.

These are unique pieces of World of Warcraft history that players will be able to win the weekend of Realm Championships. These will likely have value to both miniatures collectors and World of Warcraft fans.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to compete for this unique first place prize. More information about Realm Championships can be found here!

  • 2009 Hero of the Year Exclusive Moonkin Form EA

Final standings and the 2009 Elite Minions will be announced before Darkmoon Faire Las Vegas. As we get closer to making this announcement, here is a little something to make the prize card these top players receive 'extra special.'

Part of the Hero of the Year prize is the exclusive Moonkin Form EA. Something to make this prize even more unique, is each one of these cards is foil stamped with its number in a series out of 185.

These cards are only available to the top 10 contenders for 2009 Hero of the Year. More information about the 2009 Hero of the Year can be found here!

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 2 - Time Flies

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    Time Flies

    Wow. It's Wednesday.

We're in the convention center unloading and inventorying pallets. And by "we" I mean Ian and Javier. I'm "managing" the process, which means I'm holed up in the corner on my laptop trying to finalize a few last minute details while they throw around boxes. To be fair, the chair is a little uncomfortable and my bottle of water has gotten warmer than I like, so it's not like I'm not suffering too.

Austin is still full of awesome. The weather forecast has a 20% chance of rain over the next couple of days, but it's not enough to dampen our spirits.

We still have a long 24 hours ahead of us. The room setup starts at 2:00 am, but our production company are pros and we'll have the satellite open by noon on Thursday for registration, Honor Grinds, and our Thursday tournament schedule. The main exhibit hall early Friday morning, and it's going to be awesome.

Artist Jonboy Meyers will be onsite all weekend signing cards and doing sketches. He'll also have a number of prints and original art for sale.

We'll be discussing these posts and other things to do in Austin in this thread. The local players have put together an awesome PDF of Austin info as well, so be sure to check that out.

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 6 - It's Your Turn Part 2

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    It's Your Turn - Part 2'

I've picked out a couple emails from Austinites to share with you. This one comes from Mr. Mike Eitel. His picks are all new for me, and I can't wait to try a couple of them out

While Austin has a ton of established restaurants with those fancy things like air conditioning, and a roof, there are also a ton of hidden gems throughout Austin that only provide you with a window to order from and then you take your food on the go, and when you are short on time between the Spectral Safari and the iPod tournament, fast good food might be what you need. Luckily Austin has a ton of trailers throughout the city that serve some of the best food Austin has to offer, fast.

The Best Wurst has the best tasting and smelling Brat's in the city. Evenings on 6th street just follow the smell and you will find this little booth, and get your fill for 4 bucks. Let's keep on walking down 6th street, and find Roppolo's pizza and Hoek's Death Metal Pizza will provide you with huge slices of pizza for fast and cheap. They are open at night on 6th and are both just a slight walking distance from the Convention Center.

However there is also a need for food during the day and we still have more trailers that are not only open at night. On South Congress, Hey Cupcake started the trailer trend and now there are too many to pick from. The 1600 Block of South Congress has a ton of trailer food, cool seating outside where you can chill get good food, and watch what's happening in SOCO. Also on this same block is, The Mighty Cone for lots of food wrapped in a cone shape. Cornucopia for about 50 different popcorn flavors, including Dill Pickle and Jalapeno. Plus quite a few more places to pick from. While you are at any of these trailers make sure you get a "Mexican Coke." This is a coca-cola imported from Mexico, it comes in a glass bottle, and is made with real sugar instead of Corn Syrup, and it is a tasty smooth experience that is perfect outside on nice day.

However we are not done yet, there are still more places, almost too many to list, so if you see a place on the side of the road that isn't on the list, stop on by, the food is sure to be good, cheap and fast. The list below is just a few more places to pick from, from all the trailers we have across Austin.

    Kebabalicious
South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery ()
    Sushi A-Go-Go
    Flip Happy Crepes
    Mmmpanadas

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 7 - It's Your Turn Part 1

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    It's Your Turn - Part 1'

I've picked out a couple emails from Austinites to share with you. The first comes from Mr. Scott Morris, who put together a truly packed day a la Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I’ve lived in Austin since 1993. I actually showed up on July 4th, 1993 and was treated to my first party at Zilker Park, followed by an awesome fireworks show. I was pretty much hooked from day one. Austin is an amazing city, as it’s part hill country charm, party big city, and all fun, all the time. Literally, there is never a time when there’s nothing going on, and there is always something for everyone. Aside from the specific events that come and go like the Pecan Street Festival and the ACL, there are tons of regular attractions and places to see. So how do I describe what to do and where to go in Austin? Best way I can think about it, is if this was my last day in Austin, what would I do here?

First, I’d wake up and have breakfast. Obvious. But where? There’s so many good places! Probably the best would be to start at Kerbey Lane Café. They’ve been the best breakfast in Austin for several years and have some of the best cooks and wait staff in all of Austin. Always friendly, it’s place you could hang with your friends, or, if lucky enough, catch Matthew McConaughey or Sandra Bullock if they are in town. True story, actually ran into both of them there. He is super cool, her, not so much.

It's Kerbey, not Kirby. :P We ran into Benecio Del Toro there when he was filming Sin City. --Ben

So breakfast is down and we’re fed. What’s next? Well, if you go to the Central or South locations of Kirby, you can then take a swing to Zilker Park. You have the option of tossing a few discs and trying their Disc Golf Course, you can hike around and catch some amazing sights, or you can chill out at the Barton Springs Pool. The pool is a great place to catch some rays in the heart of Texas and also some of the hotter folks around Austin, which is never an issue on the eyes.

    >Topless sunbathing is allowed at Barton Springs Pool. The fifth largest university in the US is in Austin. You do the math. --Ben

Next, it’s time to hit Mount Bonnell, and walk off all that food! It’s a hike and a half, but it is SO worth it when you get to the top! It’s one of the most beautiful views, and a great place if you are coming to Austin with that special someone, to share some quiet time with.

So now we’ve descended Mt Bonnell, and need some lunch. We’re in North Austin at this point, so let’s hit Trudy’s Mexican restaurant for lunch, and maybe take in a Mexican Martini. Heck, if we have not qualified for World’s day two, let’s have the house limit of two! Trudy’s is a tough choice to make when you have it and Chuy’s around, but for the one last hurrah, I’d have to go with the most fun patio serving crew around. PS – yes, two of those martinis will make you forget any card or mini mistakes you made!

I have several really good stories that begin at Trudy's. None of which I'll admit to here. --Ben

So after lunch, it’s time to take in some shopping and buy some souvenirs. There are tons of malls, but for my money, I’d hit the downtown Austin itself. There are tons of great shops, all cluttered from 6th and Lamar back to 6th and 35. Yes, there are tons of bars there too, but there are also some great local shops to grab that truly authentic Austin gear!

To keep our heart rate up, we could then take a quick walk, jog, or run at Town Lake. By this time in the afternoon, it’s sights are amazing and the scenery is pretty good too! Tons of people run on this hike and bike trail and it’s a great mingling/exercise place to run around at. Not to mention, you can see the famous Stevie Ray Vaughan statue, one of the best guitarists ever!

No one is going running after Trudy's. But the SRV status is really cool. One of the best guitarists of all time. --Ben

So now it’s time for dinner… well, we’re downtown again, why not hit the famous Hut’s Hamburgers!? It’s not for the faint of heart, but they have one of the best burgers in Texas, and the bar has been there forever so everyone has that local flare and “keep Austin weird” attitude. If Burgers aren’t your swing, then you can always hit their Italian restaurant, under the same ownership, Frank and Angies, right next door, for some of the best Pizza in town!

Hut's is top notch. Really cool building that's been there forever. --Ben

After that, you are now within walking distance of Amy’s Ice Cream! You can chill out and get an Austin Original, some Shiner Bock Ice Cream, hand tossed, and presented in only the Amy’s way.

Take a bunch of stoners and put them to work in an ice cream store. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it works. A little slow on the service maybe, but it still works. --Ben

If the sun is still up, then you HAVE to go to the Oasis! It’s a one of a kind experience and a great bar and restaurant. IF you have eaten already, then drinks are awesome, if not, their food is great as well! They have TONs of deckage, and everyone applauds every night as the sun sets over the lakes of Austin. Seriously, APPLAUSE!

My recommendation is to have drinks and appetizers there, and go somewhere else for dinner. The food at the Oasis tends towards mediocre, but the view is amazing. --Ben

Now that it’s night, there’s only one place to go. 6th street. Whether you are 19 or 91, 6th street has a bar for you. And if you can’t find it there, there is the warehouse district two blocks south, with more entertainment than you can pack into one night! Bars from the Chugging Monkey to the Iron Cactus to Qua (Dancing on a floor suspended over sharks is intense!) will keep you busy all night lo

    ng!

Holy crap. Sharks! I've never been to Qua, but will try to find the time now --Ben

If you end up in bed, The Driskill is the best place to sleep, but then again, why do that when there is so much to do!

We'll be discussing these posts and other things to do in Austin in this thread. The local players have put together an awesome PDF of Austin info as well, so be sure to check that out.

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 8 - Extra Suitcases

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    Extra Suitcases

If you read yesterday's post, you know that Dragon's Lair is one of my must-stop places whenever I'm in Austin. Here are a few other places that often end up with me buying a new suitcase to carry home all my new loot.

Austin Books & Comics is my all-time favorite comic book store. They have a truly massive selection of monthlies and graphic novels, all displayed in a way that makes my credit cards weep. While I lived in Austin I went from a casual comic reader to that guy that has a bookshelf full of Powers, Preacher, Transmetropolitian, 100 Bullets, and many, many, many, many more because of this store and my good friend Steven Livingston. Not only that, but they have a great staff that truly loves comics. I can't stress how great this place it, but don't come crying to me if you end up buying another suitcase too.

My other weakness is music. Although having an 11-month old means I don't get out to live shows as often as I used to, I still try to keep up with new music, particularly indie rock and hip-hop. I'm one of those weird people that still pays for music, especially when I can support bands and stores that help keeping good up and coming artists making music and not waiting tables.

Waterloo Records & Video is one of those independent stores that makes a difference. Their selection of both new and used CDs is incredible. They also feature both local and Texas artists, as well as supporting a number of Austin venues. And continuing my theme - their staff is super friendly.

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 9 - Street Cred

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    Street Cred

My geek street cred is pretty tight.

I bought the D&D "Red Box" Basic Set back in 1985. I demo'd Magic: The Gathering with Richard Garfield and Peter Adkison at Origins '93 in Ft. Worth, and at one point in 1994 I owned nine Black Lotuses and 27 various Moxes.

I've even knew the rules well enough to play Star Fleet Battles at a competitive level.

All of these are important parts of my journey to becoming the Manager of Organized Play at Upper Deck. But if I had to select the most important ones they would probably be:

    1. Taking the DCI Level 1 judge exam at Grand Prix San Diego in 1999, administered by Mr. Ray Powers.
    2. Being randomly assigned to room with Scott Elliott at Pro Tour Boston 2002.
    3. Picking up a box of Vs. System at Dragon's Lair in Austin in the summer of 2004.

Dragon's Lair is one of those great gaming shops that I can just lose an hour in. Not to mention losing lots and lots of money. Well, I didn't really lose it - it's now sitting on my bookshelves or sorted into boxes in the garage. TCGs, RPGs, board games, minis, comics, graphics novels, and everything else a geek would need.

But the best part of Dragon's Lair is the staff. Owner David Wheeler and his employees are all great examples of what makes Austin awesome - the friendly, genuine, and outgoing people.

If you get into town early, Dragon's Lair is hosting booster drafts Monday through Wednesday. So swing by, get a little last-minute practice in, and hang out at a great Austin institution.

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 11 - BBQ part 2

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    BBQ part 2

So my first choices for barbecue required a pretty big investment of time, as well as a rental car if you're from out of town. Smoked meat is serious business, but there are some local options that will do in a pinch.

Many people consider The Salt Lick to be the best BBQ Austin has to offer. It's pretty good if you can spend an evening and drive out to the Driftwood location, which is about 30 minutes from downtown. We would always take friends there when they're visiting for the experience. The Salt Lick is BYOB, so fill a cooler with your favorite beers, print out some directions, and hit the ATM because it's cash only.

The drive through the Hill Country is very pretty, and before you know it you'll be pulling off into the huge unpaved parking lot. Be prepared for a wait though - the place will be packed on a nice fall night. And the combination of BYOB and unlimited stacks of brisket, sausage, and ribs served family-style with potato salad, slaw, and beans means that tables turn very slowly.

Next door to the Convention Center is Iron Works Barbecue. My visits there have been hit or miss, but they have some good reviews on Yelp. It is literally a two-minute walk from the Exhibit Hall, so if you're in a rush you can give them a try.

If you had to make me pick a joint inside the Austin City Limits, I'm always going to pick Rudy's Country Store. It's not a fancy place at all. When you first walk in you might think you're in a convenience store. But don't be afraid. As you make your way back to the BBQ counter, grab an ice-cold drink from the massive trough and maybe a side of potato salad. You order your meat by weight - I recommend starting with "quarter moist, quarter turkey, and half a regular sausage". If you can go with friends I recommend sampling almost everything, because as they say "It's alllllll good."

As an added bonus, Rudy's has ridiculously good breakfast tacos. It sounds crazy, but try the chopped beef and egg. If you do and you don't like it, I'll give you a booster pack.

We'll be discussing these posts and other things to do in Austin in this thread. The local players have put together an awesome PDF of Austin info as well, so be sure to check that out.

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 12 - Where's the party at?

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    Where's the party at?

Two weeks from today a few of you are going to be waking up early and trying to get just a little more playtesting in before you start playing in the playoffs of the World Championship.

Most of you will probably be getting up a little slower. You probably stayed out too late, maybe had a little too much to drink, danced a little too hard, or even made a couple friends with some locals. As the host of the fifth largest university in the United States and a strong tradition of supporting live music, Austin has a huge number of bars and clubs catering to almost anyone's preferred nightlife.

Only two short blocks north of the Austin Convention Center is 6th Street. On weekend nights six blocks of 6th Street are closed to cars, and thousands of people come to drink and dance at the dozens of bars and clubs that make up the historic entertainment and nightlife district. One word of warning - the bouncers here have seen everything, so don't expect to get in anywhere with your cheap fake ID.

    (CC) Larry D. Moore

If you're looking for a more relaxed evening, the Warehouse District is probably more your style. Four blocks west of the Convention Center along 4th Street, the Austin Warehouse District has some of the cities best restaurants, bars, and lounges. Sullivan's and Truluck's are both great places for a steak dinner if you feel like celebrating.

Speakeasy is one of my favorite places to hang out with friends. They have a great rooftop terrace if the weather is nice. Speakeasy of the beginning of one of my most memomorable birthdays, but that's a story for another time.

If you're a fan of good beer - and let's be honest, if you're not, you should be - Gingerman is a must-visit. They have an ever-changing selection of draught and bottled beer, and a great beer garden in the back perfect for a sunny afternoon. But if your idea of a good beer is Bud Lite or MGD, you should probably stay away.

Wherever you go, be sure to have a good time. If you've had too much of a good time, be sure to call a cab.

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 14 - TXRD!

    TXRD

A few years ago one of my wife's classmates was featured on an A&E show called Rollergirls. I was pretty "meh" when I first heard about it, as my only exposure to Roller Derby was from the incredibly cheesy shows that would run late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. I know it may be hard to believe for some of you, but back in the day there were only a dozen or so TV channels, cable was a rarity, and THERE WAS NO INTERNET!

Sorry about that. I panicked for a moment.

Anyway - back to the story. Roller Derby back then was lame. The production values were crap, they could barely skate, and G.L.O.W. did a much better job of putting ladies in skimpy clothes into more "compromising" poses.

So when Stacey said her friend was on this show, I was pretty skeptical. But it didn't take long for me to get hooked. The stories were awesome, the bouts were rocking, and these women could skate. I played football in High School, and I've seen my share of teeth-rattling collisions. The bruises some of these girls go home with are real.

Now Roller Derby is getting cool again. A couple of the women from the A&E Rollergirls were in "Death Proof", and Drew Barrymore's new movie Whip It comes out next weekend. But if you want to see the real deal, you're not going to find anyone better than Austin's own TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls.

The TXRD Calvello Cup Championship is going to be held on Saturday night, October 10th, at the exhibit hall right next to us. If you don't get a chance to play in our Bounty Tournament you should be next door checking it out.

    Breakfast Coma

A friend of mine posted on Facebook today and said "I'm hoping for a place to eat an unhealthy breakfast in Austin."

Now, unhealthy is easy. Go order up a couple Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Biscuits from Burger King at 620 calories and 43 grams of fat each and go to town.

But if you want a good breakfast that probably won't kill you before lunch, then swing by Kerbey Lane Cafe. Not only do they serve breakfast 24 hours a day, but it actually tastes good, and not like gravy-flavored Crisco.

Some recommendations: Chips and Salsa with Queso - yes, anytime is Queso time, Migas, Kerbey Scramble, and a short stack of the Gingerbread Pancakes. Don't be greedy and think you can polish off a full stack. You'll end up spending the weekend in a near comatose state with a big dumb grin on your face.

    Church of the Pit

Barbecue is essentially a religion. People can't even agree on what "barbecue" means, much less settle on what regional flavor is the best.

So let's start off with the basics. Barbecue, or BBQ, should only refer to meat that is cooked slowly over low heat from charcoal and natural woods. If your using high heat and propane, you're "grilling", not barbecuing. I don't want to hear any arguments - you're wrong. Get over it.

Now people have gotten into fistfights over BBQ. Some like sweet, wet sauces like Memphis ribs. Other people claim that the Carolina-style pulled pork with their spicy, vinegar sauce is the best. My in-laws are fans of Kansas City BBQ, which uses a variety of meats and a sweet, spicy sauce served on the side.

To be honest, all of them can be good. It all depends on teh pit master, the meat, and wood.

And friends, the best pit in Texas is Snow's BBQ.

Located about 50 miles east of Austin, Snow's BBQ is more of a pilgrimage than a meal. They are only open on Saturdays, and are usually sold out by noon. But the journey is worth it. Snow's was crowned the best BBQ in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine.

If your schedule doesn't allow you to make it to Snow's, then make sure you try to get to one of Top 5 Pits in Texas while you are in town. I'll also cover the best places in Austin in a future post.

  • Countdown to Worlds Day 18 - Some of my favorite people

    I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.

I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.

Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.

    Volunteer Gifts

Today is going to be a little different.

Almost exactly 10 years ago I took my first judge exam at Grand Prix: San Diego. I don't judge anymore, but I racked up almost 40 professional events and countless qualifiers and local tournaments before I put away the comfortable black shoes. It was hard work, but I met a bunch of great people and got to travel all over the world.

So when I say we wouldn't be able to run Organized Play without the help of hundreds of dedicated judges and specialists, I know exactly how much time they put into the game. Not only do they give up the chance to win awesome prizes at tournaments, but they also put in hours of work scheduling events or studying rules. It makes me very happy that we get to give back to these ladies and gentlemen by putting together an awesome set of Extended Art promo cards for them.

For the World Championships, judges and specialists that volunteer for all four days will receive two of each of the EAs listed below, along with an "El Pollo Grande" Loot card.

If you are still interested in helping out, we have a few slots left for help with public events and the Darkmoon Faire Championships. Head over here and put in your application by Friday!

We'll be discussing these posts and other things to do in Austin in this thread. The local players have put together an awesome PDF of Austin info as well, so be sure to check that out.

    See y'all tomorrow!

    Texas State Capitol

Completed in 1888, the Texas State Capitol was billed as "The Seventh Largest Building in the World" at the time. It is located in downtown Austin, and is only a few block up Congress street from the Austin Convention Center.

I've always thought it was a beautiful building. It is made of pink granite from nearby Granite Mountain over a limestone structure and foundation.

Set aside an hour before you leave to get a few pictures
