I've got a dirty secret. I'm a Texan.
I was born in Bryan, grew up in Dallas, and went to Rice University in Houston. Since then I've bounced back and forth between Texas and California, but whenever I can I try to make it back to Austin.
Over the next three weeks I'll be updating the OP blog daily with some of my favorite things to see, do, and eat while you're in Austin for the World Championships.
Extra Suitcases
If you read yesterday's post, you know that Dragon's Lair is one of my must-stop places whenever I'm in Austin. Here are a few other places that often end up with me buying a new suitcase to carry home all my new loot.
Austin Books & Comics is my all-time favorite comic book store. They have a truly massive selection of monthlies and graphic novels, all displayed in a way that makes my credit cards weep. While I lived in Austin I went from a casual comic reader to that guy that has a bookshelf full of Powers, Preacher, Transmetropolitian, 100 Bullets, and many, many, many, many more because of this store and my good friend Steven Livingston. Not only that, but they have a great staff that truly loves comics. I can't stress how great this place it, but don't come crying to me if you end up buying another suitcase too.

My other weakness is music. Although having an 11-month old means I don't get out to live shows as often as I used to, I still try to keep up with new music, particularly indie rock and hip-hop. I'm one of those weird people that still pays for music, especially when I can support bands and stores that help keeping good up and coming artists making music and not waiting tables.
Waterloo Records & Video is one of those independent stores that makes a difference. Their selection of both new and used CDs is incredible. They also feature both local and Texas artists, as well as supporting a number of Austin venues. And continuing my theme - their staff is super friendly.

We'll be discussing these posts and other things to do in Austin in this thread. The local players have put together an awesome PDF of Austin info as well, so be sure to check that out.
See y'all tomorrow!
