A Taste of the Future

Hi there, WoW fans! While the release of the 10th WoW TCG set, Scourgewar, may still be a few months a way, I'm sure many of you are already hungry for some juicy tidbits about the exciting cards coming up in this landmark set.  So, being the kindhearted soul that I am, I figured I'd whet your appetites with a handful of said juicy tidbits.

Now, my first instinct was to simply drop a few clues about cards in the set, and let you try to decipher the awesomeness that awaits you down the road.  That sounded kind of boring, though.  It’s been done.  Maybe I could make things more interesting. . .

What if we make a little game of this?  Here’s the idea: I will list below 10 clues about our upcoming 10th set.  Of those 10, only half will refer to cards that are actually in Scourgewar.  The rest are simply red herrings.  Will you be able to determine which five are the real deal?  Sounds fun, right?  Well, here we go!

Here are your clues.  In Scourgewar, you will find:

  • A cycle of ability cards that can be played for free.
  • A card whose text contains the phrase "you may point and make a Zombie noise."
  • A card whose text contains the phrase "destroy target hero."
  • An equipment that grants a keyword that has only appeared on one other card.
  • A 1-cost Mage ability that deals 50 damage.
  • A card whose text contains the phrase "if you speak in a non-scary voice"
  • A card that mirrors one of the Blood of Gladiators preview cards.
  • Three siblings that are a reference to three other siblings from the game's past.
  • A Sword that can bring an opponent from full health to death in one swing.
  • A bigger, badder relative of a very famous Mage from Through the Dark Portal.

So there you have it, folks!  Which clues do you think are legitimate glimpses into the future?  Speculate away!

What scares me the most is typically, in these sorts of situations, the most obvious "red herring" is intentionally so, and usually turns out legit. That's... sort of frightening.

Sure I'll play:

A cycle of ability cards that can be played for free.
A card whose text contains the phrase "you may point and make a Zombie noise."
An equipment that grants a keyword that has only appeared on one other card.
Three siblings that are a reference to three other siblings from the game's past.
A Sword that can bring an opponent from full health to death in one swing.

A card whose text contains the phrase "destroy target hero."(a card similar to Chief Apothecary Hildegard)
An equipment that grants a keyword that has only appeared on one other card.(Irridiated, Awesome, Dual Shield, and Conspicuous are the ones that fit the bill)
A 1-cost Mage ability that deals 50 damage.(some difficult requirement to pull off)
A Sword that can bring an opponent from full health to death in one swing.(emphasis on CAN)
A bigger, badder relative of a very famous Mage from Through the Dark Portal.(Its Wazluks Daddy, OR TIMMY!)

Those are my official speculations

Lots of good speculation so far!

Since a lot of people are making some solid guesses on the equipment hint, let me just throw this little extra tidbit into the mix: there are definitely more keywords that have only appeared on one card than the four bigbowlr1037 mentioned, including a few I haven't seen ANYONE bring up yet.  Mmm, the possibilities!

With regards to "may," that would be "may" used to express a condition, not "may" used to express possibility.  For example:

"If you stand to close to that furnace, you may catch on fire." ("May" used to express possibility.)

"While I may be on fire, it doesn't actually hurt that much."  ("May" used to express a condition.)

I bet it's an equipment that grants Conspicuous. It will be some rediculously giant sword with high ATK and low strike cost with the drawback being anyone can protect against the wielder.

I'm not sure if the "very famous mage" part meant actually IN the set, or just having to do with the Dark Portal, but I'd be more inclined to believe they meant Medivh and they meant Aegwynn as the relative? She's on Theramore and I could see her being a card.

Those are my predictions. I guess that the 50 damage may be like "deal 50 damage to traget ally who has already been dealt [some amount] of damage this turn. That why its good removal but not OP.
Equipment grants conspicious.
The mage will be version of apprentic merry.

Posibilities for siblings
Caretakers from MotL, Ironbanes (chipper, scapper, pappy), Orderkeepers from SotB, Smythes from SotB, Blood Knights (kYria, Haeleth, Tarae), and Blood(soul, blade, eye) MotL. My guess is that we get 3 new either ironbanes or blood knights.

* A cycle of ability cards that can be played for free.

More preparation cards. I like it.

* A card whose text contains the phrase "destroy target hero."

I like this... unless they play it on my hero. 8-)

* An equipment that grants a keyword that has only appeared on one other card.

Sextuple Wield would be excellent or even Two-Handed Dual Wield  but I think we'll see something on the lines of AWESOME, Conspicuous or Dual Shield. And Irradiated would be fantastic for Gnome heroes.

* A 1-cost Mage ability that deals 50 damage.

Mages don't need that! 8-)

* Three siblings that are a reference to three other siblings from the game's past.
or either
*  A bigger, badder relative of a very famous Mage from Through the Dark Portal.

I'm sorry Damien but I think you're wrong. Is Aegwynn a bad character? In the books she's a good mage working in behalf of the Alliance.

I would assume the equipment that grants a keyword that appears only on one card is "conspicuous."  Seems like a reasonable drawback for a big weapon.

A cycle of ability cards that can be played for free. - more preparation cards or perhaps abilities with a "if you control a, of if you played a"..."this ability can be played for free"

A card whose text contains the phrase "you may point and make a Zombie noise." - sounds pretty standard for the weird and wonderful cards like Leeroy Jenkins

A card whose text contains the phrase "destroy target hero." - as long as it's for Warlock I'm all in =]

An equipment that grants a keyword that has only appeared on one other card. - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be a ranged weapon that granted ranged dual weild (i've been waiting for whispering gun of slaying for so long!!!!)

A 1-cost Mage ability that deals 50 damage. - doesn't surprise me, but it'll have some weird and wonderful drawback ie. to your hero as well.

A card whose text contains the phrase "if you speak in a non-scary voice" - again, combos with the zombie text above.

A card that mirrors one of the Blood of Gladiators preview cards. - the most realistic one i can think of is Grim Reach as all the others seem limited to what they do, whereas this could have a symmetrical effect e.g. All heroes and allies in your party get +X/+X where X is the number of ongoings you control.

Three siblings that are a reference to three other siblings from the game's past. - Ironbane, Blackfist, Smythe - i'm sure there's more

A Sword that can bring an opponent from full health to death in one swing - see Gorehowl on crack

A bigger, badder relative of a very famous Mage from Through the Dark Portal. - XXXX Bitterstar, Varanis's older brother, with an ability making reference to how rare his younger brother is?

I think this might be a sword that insta-kills a hero/ally only if they have no damage on them.

E.g.

Sword of craziness (Cost 7)
Strike Cost: 3
Attack: 1
Power: If in combat with an opposing hero or ally with no damage. Sword of craziness's attack is equal to their health.

Still seeing some really good guesses coming in here.  Some people are definitely on the right track, even with the speculation on what the individual cards do!  On the other hand, I haven't seen a list of five yet that were all correct.  Heh.

While people are making some very good cases as to why they think their lists are correct, I'm surprised few people are talking about why they think the other picks AREN'T correct.  That's a fun discussion all in itself!

He didn't necessarily say that the 5 real ones WEREN'T from the past as well.

And some can just be downright lies.

MobZombie said:

Hmm, yeah, but the other cards are pretty much un-"mirrorable"

The only 3 cards that I can think of are:
A card similar to Tidal Mastery which heals you for 10?
Or a Meltdown that deals X to target hero or destroys a armor with X cost.
Last one is an Ossus that prevents all non-combat damage.

Otherwise, I can't really think of how you are going to "mirror" a Kazamon, Canissa, or the Arena sets.
September 16, 2009 6:55 AM

BattyMatty said:

Really, none of the other BoG previews make sense mirrored?  It's actually kind of fun looking back at each of those cards, and asking your self "what is the opposite of this effect?"

You might find one that's VERY exciting. . .

(Then again, it could just be one of those devious red herrings!)
