Vs. System Mega Weekend Coverage
7/5/2007
As the last players trickled out of the arena exits, the event staff began folding UDE tablecloths and breaking down the magnificent setup. The vendors were closing shop as tumbleweeds swept across the bare floor. All that remains are small scraps of paper—tiny shreds of Mega-Weekend history. They recount match wins and losses in a seemingly infinite series of repeating counts down from 50.
The Amateur Championship offered players a shot at amazing prizes, and lucky casual players slipped away with Xboxes and iPods. Triads of teams fought through eleven rounds of high-class tournament play that concluded with Sunday’s Top 4 draft. The WVGuys faced elimination at the hands of the Cat Fanciers, while Samoule bested Zarbarns. The finals were decided and Tommy Ashton, Matthew Tatar, and Stephen King of Team Cat Fanciers topped the French Canadian invasion to obtain the $10K Championship crown.
In the final hours, casual tournaments wrapped up, the Winner’s Choice events concluded, and the Vs. System Mega-Weekend expired. Security emptied the once crowded mega-hall and dimmed the lights, but the weekend will live on in the memories of those who attended. If you ever get a chance to make it to one of these outstanding events, you should do whatever it takes to attend the next Vs. System extravaganza.
