 Matthew Cooper wins the Manchester Master Challenge! He fought his way through a marathon quarterfinal match before battling two decks at opposite ends of the Vs. System spectrum; the unknown quantity “Warpaint” and the decidedly well-known QuickFate. In the end, Matthew’s Checkmate / Villains United deck claimed victory and justified his unique build, which had raised some eyebrows earlier in the day.
The weekend was a showcase of unique decks all around, as players from Germany, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, and elsewhere in Europe came to Manchester to reveal their latest tech. Cards from the Hellboy Essential Collection got to tussle with the heroes and villains of Marvel Team-Up. The Heralds of Galactus fought alongside the earthly forces of Spider-Man and the Spider-Friends. Uneasy alliances were formed and unusual card combinations were revealed.
Now it’s up to Matthew and his final opponent, Christian Ehmann, to build anew as they prepare for UDE to fly them out to Gen Con Indy in August for the Pro Circuit. Europe will be watching to see if these two can replicate their Silver Age successes in the Modern Age format.
