R&D City Championships Tournament

The R&D City Championships tournament is over, and Andrew Yip has emerged victorious with the power of The Infinity Gauntlet! Piloting Jason Hager’s Checkmate equipment deck, he beat out David Humpherys and Qward control in the quarterfinals, Mike Hummel and the Hellfire Club in the semis, and finally, Patrick Sullivan and the Skrulls in the finals. Jason Hager, the winning deck’s creator, will now have the honor of seeing his face on a card in an upcoming set.

Today’s tournament was the culmination of the last few months of buzz within the Vs. System community. The R&D team picked their eight favorite decks that have won a City Championship, piloting their favorites through today’s event.

Congrats to Jason Hager, and to Andrew Yip for winning the big tournament!

As it turns out, I had picked probably one of the most complicated yet powerful decks of the City Championship submissions.

The tournament itself was pretty cool, and while it was fairly casual to start, by the end of it, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care about winning.

While the two R&D veterans were actually playing on behalf of their decks’ designers, it was clear that they both wanted the win badly.

I felt that choosing this deck was my best chance at not getting immediately slaughtered by these young-bloods using all these new-fangled cards that I’ve only seen during grid reviews and Sneak Previews.

The real question to be answered, play-skill jokes aside, was whether or not Pat’s offense would be able to fight its way through Fiorillo’s extensive library of exhaustion effects to take the game.
