    Havoc, the proud stunning machine

    Hi, there.

I had the Havoc (Cost 7 - X-factor/Star jammers) and he had a pretty cool power and a powerful keyword that makes him a very dangerous characters... Energize and Stun ability.

I know that when you are defending with havoc you could use energize two times as per said in FAQ, but what happen when you use the ability on the proposed attacker, did you cancel the attack? Can I stun a shifted character with Havoc?

Example: The opponent had priority. He had 2 characters and deadpool 3 on curve 7.  I had Havoc 7, Ciclops 4 and Siren. The opponent  declare the attack on Havoc with one of his characters and activate the power of deadpool and now he becomes shifted. The power of Siren triggers and I use the Havoc activated power in response and target Deadpool. Is He stunned?

Example 2: The same situation.... Assuming that deadpool can be stunned, I ready Havoc and activated it again and target the main attacker. What hapen? The attack resolution will be resolved no matter what happen with the proposed atacker OR I cancel the attack?

Another thing, If I use a plot twist that ready a x-factor in this very attack, target Havoc while defending and Energize him twice again? If this is true, he can stun 4 characters while defending this attack with the energize effect, right? If, by chance, I got 4 of those Mutant Town Messiahs (ready x-factor defender) cards in my hand and play in a row over Havoc while defending, that means he can target up to 10 characters using defensively his activated power and combining with the energize keyword this attack?

Re: Havoc, the proud stunning machine

You cannot stun a shifted character, the shifted character is out of the game and cannot [at this time] be targeted by anything.
If you stun the proposed attacker, BEFORE the attack is legal, then the attack is negated, and Havok never becomes a defender, and thus cannot energize.
If you target the proposed attacker before the attack is legal, and your opponent does discard a card - thus saving his attacker from being sutnned, Havok then becomes a defender and energized, allowing you to again target the attacker.  If your opponent us unable to discard another card then his attacker is stunned before the resolution of combat.  Havok is exhausted, and will remain so unless he is attacked again, at which point you can use his abilities again.
At this point I just want to address the end of your questions, regarding the Mutant Town Messiahs plot twist.  I think your numbers are off, but the basic idea is there.  When your opponent announces an attack, before it is legal, you can use Havok's power and stun a character [unless the opponent discards are card].  You can then use the energize ability to ready Havok, and use his ability again [so now we are up to 2 possible stuns, not 4].  At this point Havok is a defender and you can use as many Mutant Town Messiahs as you have to ready and use his ability over and over for up to 6 stuns [barring anything that would let you reuse a plot twist].  So you get a total of 6 stuns, not 10.
However if you target and stun the attacker, well then there is no limit to how many times you can use this ability.

Re: Havoc, the proud stunning machine

    Cool.

About how many times Havoc is able to target characters when defending, I think he can stun up to 10 in such scenario. Lets do the math using the MEV FAQ about Energize. Considering Havoc in play and his controller had 4 Mutant Town Messiah in hand. In this very moment, Havoc is under attack and the opponent don´t had any cards left in his hand.

Havoc is the proposed defender and he is ready.

-----------------------In the FAQ, we read in the Energize entry:

Energize is a keyword power that characters can have. It means:

Whenever this character defends, ready it.

If a character with energize is proposed as a defender, you can use an activated power it has before its energize trigger resolves, then again after it resolves before the combat concludes.

    ----------------

So, Havoc activate his stun power when he becomes the proposed defender and before energize triggers (Target Character #1 stunned), then again after it resolves (Target Character #2 stunned). Now, I play Mutant Town Messiah and ready Havoc... He still defending and are ready. Havoc activate his power again (Target Character #3 stunned), but he is defending and in this situation, energize triggers again, and he can be ready because there is no restriction in the keyword how many times he can be ready in such situation. So, WHENEVER this character defends, ready him. After energize triggers again, and he is ready, Target character #4 is stunned. Once more, you can use the second Mutant Town Messiah and ready him... You see what I was talking about. For each Mutant town messiah, Havoc can stun 2 targets besides his first 2 victims.

In this situation, Havoc stuns 2 targets when he becomes the proposed defender, plus 2 when the first Mutant Town Messiah plot twist is played, plus 2 when the second Mutant Town Messiah plot twist is played, plus 2 when the third Mutant Town Messiah plot twist is played and plus 2 when the last of this kind is played... Ten Stun attempts in one defense.

Can you, folks tell me when the energize cannot be trigger and limit Havok to 6 stun attempts with his power?

    All my best regards,

Re: Havoc, the proud stunning machine

    CR Glossary: Defends
A character defends when it gains the “defender” characteristic and becomes a defender. Powers that trigger whenever a character “defends” or “becomes a defender” will trigger only once per character that becomes a defender.

    SOFT: 11. Defends, Defender
A character “defends” as it “becomes a defender.” The two expressions mean the same thing. If a character is team attacked, it defends only once.

Example: Beast Boy reads, “Whenever Beast Boy defends, put a +1/+1 counter on him for each attacker.” If two characters team attack Beast Boy, his power triggers only once, but he gains two counters on resolution (i.e., one “for each attacker”).

A character stops being a defender if it becomes stunned, leaves play, changes controllers, or is removed from an attack. Otherwise, it remains a defender for the duration of the attack.

Energize only triggers when Havoc defends (and only once each time he becomes attacked). After which, playing MTM to ready him and use his activated power again does not cause energize to trigger a second time.

While MTM requires the character be an X-Factor defender; playing it on an exhausted defending Havoc does not cause him to 'become a defender again' and so does not trigger 'Whenever this character defends' powers.

With 2 copies of MTM, a ready Havoc, and an opponent with no cards in his hand, it would be possible to stun up to 4 characters if your opponent chooses to attack Havoc.

    0 MTM: 2 stuns
    1 MTM: 3 stuns
    2 MTM: 4 stuns
    3 MTM: 5 stuns
    4 MTM: 6 stuns
