Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
When this face-down card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, your opponent selects and executes 1 of the following effects: - Discard 1 random card in their hand. - Select 1 monster on their side of the field and destroy it.
When this card is destroyed, does your opponent choose which effect to use when the effect is activated (similar to Enemy Controller or Stratos) or when the effect resolves?
For instance, let's say the opponent has only one monster on the field, and I have two Dark Coffin set. Either one of us plays Heavy Storm, destroying the two Coffins. There is two possible scenarios:
A.) The opponent chooses at activation. If this is the case, then it would be possible for the opponent to choose the second effect for both cards, thus only losing one card. Also, if this is true, would Dark Coffin target?
B.) The opponent chooses at resolution. The opponent would be forced to either destroy the monster and discard one card from their hand, or discard two cards from their hand, assuming they had enough cards. I was told online that this was the case, but I'd like to get other opinions.

Re: Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
"Dark Coffin" should start its own chain.
I target a face-down "Dark Coffin" with "Mystical Space Typhoon". When the chain resolves, "Mystical Space Typhoon" destroys "Dark Coffin".
Then "Dark Coffin" activates in the Graveyard, starting a new chain, that a player can respond to with appropriate Spell Speed 2 or 3 effects...

You are correct, but that doesn't answer his question, does it? ;)
And this is something I've been forgetting to ask too, so I eagerly await some answers.

Sorry. It starts a new chain. When the effect of "Dark Coffin" activates in the Graveyard, they choose which effect to execute, then when it resolves, it is executed. Like "Poison of the Old Man".

Edit: I believe Dark Coffin targets, but it was not included on the list here: http://www.pojo.biz/board/showpost.php?p=4456100
Rationale: If Dark Coffin did not target, its second effect would read "Destroy 1 monster"
So, assuming Dark Cofin Targets, Both Dark Coffins are triggered and will start a new chain. At activation, each Dark Coffin can select the same monster, the first Dark Coffin will resolve destroying the monster and the second Dark Coffin will resolve without effect.
Enjoy the game

Re: Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
I've always wondered if it targets, since DC's controller doesn't control the effect.
I would assume you cannot use Prime Material Dragon's effect against DC, because its not known if it will destroy a monster at DC activation.

Re: Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
Prime Material Dragon should be able to negate Dark Coffin because Gemini Imps can negate Dark Coffin. This ruling then leads me to believe that the choice is chosen at activation since Prime Material Dragon and Gemini Imps should only be able to negate the appropriate mode of Dark Coffin. (i.e. Gemini Imps can only be used when opponent chooses to randomly discard and Prime Material Dragon can only be used when opponent chooses to destroy a monster). I don't think it targets though because it wouldn't make much sense for my opponent to choose a target for my card effect.

Re: Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
I'm in agreement with Tsui on this one.
As far as I'm aware, "Dark Coffin" does not target. The opponent simply chooses which option they will resolve when the card is activated. They make no choices at this time. Then, when the card resolves, they resolve the effect they selected when the effect was activated.
And yes, "PMD" can negate "Dark Coffin" IF the player chose to destroy a monster.

Re: Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
Huh, didn't know about that ruling on Gemini Imps. That makes a lot of sense, then. I'll have to show this to that online person then, next time I get the chance. It's unfortunate, though, makes Dark Coffin a little less useful then, IMO. At least they can't choose the same monster for both effects (assuming they chose both to destroy a monster)...
Thanks for the help everyone.

They cannot choose to "Destroy 1 monster they control" if they do not control any monsters.

http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/COMMUNITY/forums/thread/1432328.aspx Update, so @ resolution. So Gemini Imps can negate a card that doesn't guarantee a discard?

Re: Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
I'm thinking that this is another one of those ruling disconnects like Zanji from 8 months ago. Hopefully Curtis will revisit this. I can't see the chain playing out as Dark Coffin is destroyed. Link 1, activate Dark Coffin (unspecified effect), Link 2, Gemini Imps to negate it.
Enjoy the game

Re: Dark Coffin - When does the opponent choose?
I'm not so sure on that. Gemini Imps can also negate Mind Crush, even though at time of activation the game doesn't know if you will have to discard anything. So maybe Gemini Imps only requires that a card have the possibility of discarding something on resolution for it to be able to negate it.
