Andrew Bowling and I sat down for the demo at GenCon. We both thought it was a fast paced game and quite easy to catch onto, however, it appeared there was a very limited pool of cards in the demo decks which made the game appear a little TOO simple. I didn't see any drawing effects and I couldn't seem to draw any resources so I was pretty well out of luck and got beat down in a quickly and steadily, it was difficult to recover. I'm not sure our demo game was a good indication of what the game can or will be.
There aren't really any new mechanics to the game that the average TCG player wouldn't know already. While that makes sure the game won't be difficult to catch onto, I'm not sure there is a lot in it from the stand point of "freshness" that will temp current TCG players away from other games. I see it more of a game that might appeal to players new to TCGs.
I guess my opinion of it really depends on what UD is trying to accomplish with it. If it's aimed at a younger inexperienced TCG player, then I think it can certainly accomplish that goal if promoted well. If the hope is to appeal to an older and more experienced TCG crowd and perhaps lure them into this new game from another TCG or in addition to the TCG they play, then the game appears to need something more fresh and appealing. These observations though are only based on the demo game I played with a limited card pool, that's not always a good indication of what the total game is or will be about.
