    Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

    Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments
Hello Players. Currently UDE Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments are run two per tournament day--one constructed deck tournament, and one sealed-deck tournament. Some players and Tournament Organizers have suggested trying only running one format on any given PCQ day. The thinking is that this would allow for more people to participate in each tournament, increasing the level of competition, and the overall value of the tournament, as pack prizes could increase, and judges would have more manageable days. Please vote in the poll on this issue, and post comments. Thanks for participating. Best Regards, Scott Elliott Organized Play Program Manager Upper Deck Entertainment

I prefer two PCQ formats per PCQ day.   (52.6%)
I prefer one PCQ format per PCQ day.   (47.4%)

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I prefer having both formats available.

As far as time, all it takes is for the tournaments to ACTUALLY start ON-TIME. What a novel concept you say?  Also, starting earlier would make sense too.

I for one prefer to play in the Sealed format. So if only Constructed is used, I won't be attending. Therefore, the hoped for increase in attendance may be negligible.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

As a PTO, I also believe there should be a choice.

My local market likes the constructed format since many of my players come from Yugioh, where constructed is the format of choice. However, we are also aware of large sealed following 600 miles up the road. So the opportunity to provide both allows our communities to mix on a regular basis.

I dont think starting times are the issue, regardless of when you start, if one runs a PCQ by the book including best-of-3 playoffs and untimed finals, it is going to be a long day. I believe the playoff format as well as the current metagame (Control decks in particular) are to blame for drawn out events.

I am aware that an attempt to change the playoffs to the one game format failed due to a backlash from the playing community. I understand that Players want the best chance to win and the 3-game format delivers that. However I hope you consider all the people affected that will not be voting: the Parents who drop off players first thing in the morning and pick them up last thing at night , the Player who drops despite an X-0 record because they have school/church/work the next day (Had 3 last weekend) etc. I'd also to see a return to Finals that are actually played (no prize splits) so I can showcase those games, almost impossible in the 2-a-day format.

The downside is for me is that Split PCQs will increase my overheads (eg venue, transport, staff etc) but for the peace of mind and a faster happier event, it will be well worth it!

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I prefer two tournaments. Most places that I've been to start the sealed tournament at 10am, and the constructed tournamnet at 1pm, which is usually the end of round 3 of the sealed tournament. If you're doing poorly in sealed, you can drop and have a second chance at getting PC points in constructed. Personally, I always play sealed, as I find it more enjoyable.

The best way to speed up the tournaments would be to have them start on time, and issue slow play warnings to players who consistently play past the end of round bell.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

    I like having the double-formats.

My PTO has started putting the constructed PCQ first so that the first tourney moves faster due to not having to sacrifice so much time to open, register, pass and build sealed decks. And, by the time it comes to starting the second tourney, more players can drop to play in the sealed, as more rounds will have been completed and players have a better idea of where they stand in the constructed standings.

Since he's done that, the PCQs have been smoother, faster, and finish earlier with less wait-time.

I'd recommend that PTOs give that a shot before dropping to a single-tourney format.

Yes [Y] Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I enter in the PCQs down in Hawaii, and as a player and a tournament organizer, I absolutely think that two PCQs over two days is the best way to go.  Not only will it increase attendance, but also doesn't leave the sense that the player's missing out anything.  Having both of them in the same weekend seems to work well also.

I accidently voted for two PCQs in one day though. :(  Is there a way to fix that?  Thanks.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I would rather both be on the same day. Every PCQ I've gone to has been at least an hours drive away because none have been held in my immediate area (and I'm only 15 minutes outside of Philadelphia PA nonetheless). With gas prices going through the roof lately I wouldn't want to make twice as many long drives. I might feel differently if there were more PCQs in more locations. Southern New Jersey is getting its 1st PCQ next month. Philadelphia has had 2 10ks but no PCQs. At least with the current format people who drive a long distance to play in a sealed and do poorly can still play in constructed the same day.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I'm one who'd argue for the 1 event per day.

I hate travelling to a PCQ and then deciding on what I'd rather play sealed or constructed. I'm sure I'm not hte only one who's ever had this problem.

Events are not always easy to get to but I think that's to be assumed most of the time. There's only so many that'll be easy to drive to or accessible to a large amount of people who are all happy about the amount of travel they've had.

I just love playing the game and want to get as much serious play out of it as possible. It's great playing your friends and so on but why should a potential double header gaming experience be ruined by having both sealed and constructed on the same day.

I mean they don't even need to have sealed and constructed a day after each other! They could have them more spaced apart. Not to mention the fact that if you miss a pcq date now you'll miss both events. If there's 2 then you at least have the chance of making one.

Furthermore, with the arguement of it'll increase costs of course it will but you're more than likely going to recoup them through the players who would play in both events and any VS lover is surely going to play in both.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I couldn't agreed more but  in Britian UDE is a pile of crap. To get a PCQ is a miracle in the first place. MY Local store owner has been applying for 3 Months to get at least a pre-release let alone a PCQ. UDE UK was a lot better before Yuri got promoted and Gideon is a fool. Get a Head of UDE UK who can orgainse something not nothing.

I have had experiences with both guys.

At The Yugioh Nationals i went with a broken leg and Yuri helped me all he could by letting me jump queues etc . .

Gideon on the other hand i worked for 3 Months ago. He organised an event at a Comic convention in Bristol hoping to get players to play. In a whole weekend he got about 15 playing Vs with about 4 seriously interested.

I think there's a lot of people who'd gladly back me up!

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

IF you feel the need to make the switch to 1 format per day, please put more events in more places.

I live in the state of Kentucky. There was 1 PCQ in 2004. There have been 2 PCQ's in 2005, but they were on consecutive days. 2 of these were a 135 minutes drive the other was a 90 minute drive.

I've attended more events in Tennessee(3 PCQ/1 Sneak) and Ohio(3 PCQ/2 $10K's) than I have my home state. Tennessee events are held in Nashville(135 minutes) and Knoxville(120 minutes). Ohio events have been Cincinnati(150 minutes) and Columbus(255 minutes).

If the switch is made, please find someone who is willing to give Kentucky more than a token number of PCQ's. Even if the switch isn't made, find someone who is willing to give Kentucky more PCQ's.

I prefer the double format. However, if having single format events means MORE events closer to home, then I can live with that.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

If the goal is to increase participation, start both events AT THE SAME TIME!  This will encourage marginal/casual players (such as myself) since there will be 20 slots available giving PC points, or simply ban outright "double-dipping" on a single day (i.e. top-10 finishes in both events on a single day).  It's not the serious players that you have to encourage, but the folks at the margins - that is where the growth in the active player pool will, by definition, take place.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I am writting from Guayaquil, Ecuador, sadly we do not have PCQ's although hopefully soon we will, stores like my own are buying directly from ude to have this start. I attended a pcq in South Florida, sadly I got there late... When I was watching I saw people running around from one tournament to another... I liked that at start but then it became strange because most people with constructed decks ran into the sealed tournaments and so on... The thing is that a single format with better prizes allows more people to be in that tournament, more prizes to be handed out, etc. The fact of the matter is it would be great to either separate them in more time, in sense that one tournament takes place on saturday and the other format on sunday... Or with a one week spread.
Thats my point of view of what I think...

If any big shot reads this, allow PCQ's for Guayaquil

    Thanks

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I like two tournaments much better than one.  I have to travel to play in a PCQ, and it's much better for me to be able to play in two rather than travel all that way just to play in one.  Also, I have problems getting enough points to play in the Pro Circuit, so I have a better chance to get enough points by playing in two.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

I'm a big fan of the innovative double-format structure.  Spreading the prize structure, and invite points, across two tourneys makes for a wider playing field, which makes more casual players more hopeful.  Less interesting constructed formats do form from time to time, but the double-format means the sealed will always be of interest to the competitors.

I was very wary of the format initially, but have definitely been won over.

Re: Poll: Pro Circuit Qualifier tournaments

How is it that everyone here is leaning towards the two-per format, but the polls are still 50/50???
