Do you think eBay prices will go up when set 3 is released?

Do you think the prices for minis on eBay will jump when set 3 is released? Stuff is going pretty cheap atm.

Depends on what new figures change the meta and make big slashes at events.  If a figure from Core or Spoils really complements a figure for Vengeance and sees some significant play, I would expect prices for that older figure to go up.

Re: Do you think eBay prices will go up when set 3 is released?

I definitely do not think the prices will go up.  Face it, the prices for this game have "never" been good.

The retail prices are too high, and the secondary market prices are too low.  If you pay retail for a booster, your paying $5 a mini.  You can barely sell the rare for $5 and the commons can "sometimes" get $1.  It has always been like this.  If you pull an epic and sell it you can "maybe" get back what you paid for the booster pack (w/ Jaina and Vashj as the only profitable exceptions) and that is just terrible.  Epics are 1 in 8 boosters.  They "should" be able to fetch the cost of a booster pack at a minimum.

Delaying set 3 to post 2010 doesn't help either.  How many trade threads do you see here on the forums?  not many?  Most of the threads are people quitting and selling off their collections.  Or they are about rippers and scammers.  The prices will continue to plummet.  A core set epic, Tyrande Whisperwind, just sold for $1.50 on ebay.  Did the seller charge insane shipping?  Not really.  The figure sold for under $5 shipping included.  Lolz.  Yes, the prices might rise when set 3 comes up, but they would be rising from already extremely low prices.  They wont instantly become $10 rares.

However, who knows.  Anything could happen.  The prices for the new chase figures might be very high.  But in turn, that might lower the prices for rares and uncommons?  Before, some people would buy cases just for the chance at cracking a top tier loot.  Come set 3, many many many more people "might" buy cases just for the chance at uber rare chase and top tier loot.  The market could be flooded with the commons and lower tier rares, affecting their market value.

Re: Do you think eBay prices will go up when set 3 is released?

Note: the crafting materials go for 9-10$ or so, even the bad ones, and take 7 materials to craft, so that material card is worth about 1.25$ on average. The loot cards also are worth a bunch and show up regularly. This takes away from minis value on the secondary market. You get more for your booster (which is worth, what, 10-12$ retail, unless you like paying through the nose by buying them individually instead of by the case) than just the minis' worth.

I don't think the prices are so much in the crapper. There's no economic model under which the rares are worth more than a couple bucks while some epics are worth 40+$ (like Vashj). In Magic you also get a whole lot of worthless boosters, since unless you open a money rare you might as well have opened nothing (we used to just dump our commons in a pile after drafts for the kiddos to sift through).

I'm sure if you totalled out the average value of the content of a booster, it would be slightly above what retailers have to pay for them. There has never been a game where a booster was worth less than its average content. When that happens, the price of boosters go up or availability dries up... See From the Vault series for an example, when it comes to non-blind content, but it's the same principle really. If your store made more money out of singles than boosters, they'd open up all their boosters to sell as singles until the prices went down under the booster prices or they ran out of boosters.

dunno if prices go up...but i collectors (like me) will have to spend loads of cash!

    Onyxia Raid Pack
    HEROIC set with huge miniatures
Souls Of Vengeance (i usually collect all the minis and then hunt the legendaries down..1 by 1 :P still missing 8 from the first 2 sets...)

so our wallets will have to empty again in order for our eyes to be satisfied with what they see...

Re: Do you think eBay prices will go up when set 3 is released?

Often individual minis will change quite a bit in value with new sets when new teams become big, however, I doubt that the overall price will increase.  Some figures will go down in price and others increase.

Both wow tcg and wow minis always have had relatively cheap secondary markets for singles.  This is due primarily do to the fact that the loot cards are effectively subsidising the opening of a lot of the packs.

I personally like having lower secondary market costs since it allows more people into the game and makes it much cheaper to buy teams/decks.

Re: Do you think eBay prices will go up when set 3 is released?

I guess I should have specified what I was referring to. I'm trying to put the two sets together by buying lots on eBay and reselling the minis I don't need. So I've got boxes of extra minis stacked all over the place here that I need to list on eBay.

I've been watching eBay prices daily for the last 3 months at least, and it seems like the price for 40+ lots of minis has really dropped a lot in the last month.

Trying to decide if I should sell my extras now and use the money towards a case of the new set, or wait until prices go back up when the new set is released (if prices for big lots go back up that is).

Re: Do you think eBay prices will go up when set 3 is released?

The market jumps unpredictably.  I recently sold a lot of 34 for about $30 (10 rares and 24 commons).  The guy who bought them (maybe it was you - lol) listed the same minis and even used the picture I posted for my auction, and they sold for over $60 with identical s/h prices.

I don't see how the commons from either of the first 2 sets could possibly increase any time soon, since they were still providing Core Set boosters at World's for the draft, and eBay sellers are struggling to get $100 for back-stocked cases.  I know that Haruka commands more attention than all of the other rares and most of the epics, but beyond that the value for pieces from either set seems driven by whimsy.

I wanted to give everyone a list of all the trustworthy people who traded with me on this site, but it exceeds maximum character length. To me, that's a hopeful sign.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure we're ever going to see a Set 3...or any more sets for that matter. What do you guys think?

I think we've seen too much info about the upcoming product to declare it DOA.  From the minis to the marketing materials to the packaging itself.  The reasoning of delays due to production issues fits the scenario as it has been laid out & played out.

But then again HeroClix had a set in the bag plus more planned out when Topps pulled the plug on WizKids.

Very true.  Even though all signs point to production issues, we don't know what those issues are or how severe it is.  Regardless, I think after this long of a delay they'll need to do some pretty good marketing to restart the game.

    to restart the game.

After a wait this long, and after only 2 sets, it almost seems like that's exactly what's going to have to happen.

However, it's a solid game, and a great franchise (WoW is a very marketable angle for a CMG) so I'm confident it will continue. While it's easy to fall into the doom-and-gloom mode, I prefer to look at all the strengths the game has going for it, and that gives me much optimism. It's a great game, and the sculpts are -a-m-a-z-i-n-g-!

To be honest with you this post feels a bit "troll-y".  This has all been hashed out here before and the official word was declared that they needed to find a new manufacturer in China and that caused these huge delays, pushing release back to early 2010.
