One Man's Junk: Part Six, Celenias Firemane

After some ponderous pondering I decided to go with Celenias this week. I felt like he/she/it would really stretch my imaginative potential. As you may have noticed I have been trying to pick out characters with some kind of unique feature that I feel sets them apart, and then build to maximize them. So here is my analysis of the situation: raw statwise, Celenias fits in with the average for ranged characters at that honor cost. but he doesn't come with any of the nifty little secondary abilities that make the other characters interesting. The 1.5 dice to tick ratio is average as well, although being at the lower end of the spectrum for dice rolled per attack his attacks will often be inneffectual. We come now to one of the three things that make Firemane a potential candidate for One Man's Junk: the crit. Adding +1 attack counters can make a peashooter into a cannon, with enough time. Unfortunatley for our little friend, these magical little counters disappear after ticks 5 and 10. This means that even if he crits every attack, the most dice he will ever roll in a single attack is 5. Good while this is good, it can only happen once per 10 ticks, and only with back to back crits starting on the first tick after the removal trigger. And with only 3 dice to get things rolling, you can see that our chances are a little bleak. Let's try to fix that.

Team 1: Drood Luv, 15 Honor
    Morova of the Sands
    -Moonkin Form
    -Mana Potion
    Celenias Firemane x2
    -Hunters Mark
    -Call Old Bones x2
    -Misdirection x2
    -Arcane Shot x2

The second and third important things about Celenias is that he is cheap, and has access to hunter ABC's. For this next team we are going to flood the board with 6 figures for a mere 12 honor.

Team 2: Discount Zoo Tickets, 12 Honor
    Celenias Firemane x3
    -Call Bloodclaw x3
    -Call Fury x3
    -Serpent Sting x2
    -Hunters Mark

So, as usual, I saved the funnest for last.

    Team 3: Debufferiness, 17 Honor
    Morova of the Sands
    -Moonkin Form
    -Moonfire
    -Entangling Roots
    Magistrix Kiala
    -Incinerate
    -Curse of Weakness
    -Curse of Agony
    Celenias Firemane
    -Hunters Mark
    -Serpent Sting
    -Viper Sting

Dot 'em up and unload Incinerate on them! Celenias is not the star of the show here, but in theory he works really well because he can double debuff a single mini on the same turn, or two separate minis, also on the same turn, all from a range of four. That, and his low honor cost, making this team cheaper than trip Morts (not that I am saying that this could hang with Morts). But 17 Honor is pocket change these days. Lets just put it this way, this team can burst it down even the toughest epic in the first couple of ticks in the game. Celenias puts Hunters Mark and Serpent Sting on it, generating rrs, Morova Moonfires, followed by a starburst Wrath, Kiala Curses with Weakness, and then Incinerates for 8 attack power. All on the same tick. Viola, one BBQed epic just got you half of your VPs. Odds are pretty good that Kiala will crit and ready incinerate. Of course, that is only if you want to burn all your debuffs on a single target. Dang, I just thought of what this would do to Wall plus Graccus. A two fer one deal, right there. I hope you enjoyed this installment, next week will feature Rexxar.

Typically the 4 honor dudes are brought to the table for their ABCs and not so much for their stats.  The problem with Celenias is hunters don't really have great ABCs yet.  Certainly nothing that is generating kills by itself (like say chain lightning or flame strike can do on the right 4 honor characters).  I kinda like the idea of comboing a hunter dot with incinerate, but hunters don't have a debuff that recharges, which would really work for something like that.

Yeah, I kind of had to go with Celenias for the articles sake. I was looking at Azarak for a bit, for his crit, but I don't think it boosts incinerate, which was my original supposition. Not sure whether to go with Zazu for increased survivability, or Aluna for the heavy hits. We might have to revisit Celenias when Aimed Shot is printed.

These articles are great. Jeriatric, please do us all a favor and PM Brinkman on these forums. With just a bit more effort every week, you could see these on the front page.

Interesting article. Have you play tested any of those teams much? I guess I'm a bit skeptical of the first one. I just don't like basing a team around a character's crit when they're only rolling 3 dice.

Your second team has some advantages in its low honor cost and its potential to clog up the board, but it would suffer against well armored teams as it has zero magic output.

Your third team looks pretty fun however. I'll have to try that one out sometime.

Like someone else allready kinda said, Celenias probably works better if you take her for her ABCs and not rely on her main attack. If you wedged her between Thrall and a Moonkin, she'd have some nice output, but that is too specific and not versatile enough.

The one time I had fun playing Celenias was in a solo dungeon scenario. I needed a low honor DPT character, so I took her for her pet. I actually got lucky with her and crit twice in a row, but it only happened once (over a period of 3.5 rounds or so). I do remember that she was pretty fun to play. She was great for finishing off low health monsters so that I wouldn't have to waste someone else's higher tick attack.

Nah, no playtesting. This is strictly theory crafting, and Celenias is honestly one of the most gimped charaters I have ever tried to brainstorm about. Honestly my favorite bands to make are janky ones that catch people by surprise. Check out the Grimdron Article for the Halloween Band.

Re: One Man's Junk: Part Six, Celenias Firemane

Regarding your DoT choices, wouldn't Corruption play better than Curse of Agony?  You're expecting to quickly take down a enemy character with the Incinerate, but that ends up leaving your entire ABC arsenal exhausted.  For the added 1-tick, you could take advantage of the Recharge on Corruption and use that to apply pressure on one of the other two enemies.

In my own mind, I'm already waffling on this point, since Kiala's on-card Fear may be a better use of her ticks after she goes for the kill shot.  Anyone else have some thoughts?

I wanted to give everyone a list of all the trustworthy people who traded with me on this site, but it exceeds maximum character length. To me, that's a hopeful sign.
