Taking Mags stuff, using Deep Sea Salvage, and preventing fatal combat damage with armor...

Couple of questions I have about some random stuff.

    1. If players take control of raid bosses ongoing abilities that deal damage, do they get to choose the target for them, or does the person running the Raid?

i.e.  Trample Underfoot (Ability - Magtheridon deals 2 melee damage to target hero or ally.
Ongoing: When Magtheridon becomes exhausted, he deals 2 melee damage to target hero or ally.) is in play.  A raiding player plays Flame Bender Ta'jin (
When Ta'jin enters play, gain control of target ability. If it's attached, you may reattach it.), taking the Trample Underfoot.  Does that raiding player get to choose who Magtheridon deals damage to, or does the Magtheridon player?

    2. According to rule 500.1 there is no priority window between the ready and draw phase, but rule 501.1 states a priority window opens before the draw phase happens.  Does this mean you can complete Deep Sea Salvage (During your turn, pay 4 to complete this quest.
Reward: Put a card from your graveyard on top of your deck.) to put a card on top of your library and then draw it on your draw phase?

    3. The rules state that in combat conclusion the damage is dealt to each thing and does not use the chain, then pre-priority processing checks for fatal damage.  I assume this is to stop thinks like 'putting damage on the stack' in Magic, but does that mean you can't prevent fatal damage from going on your hero with armor or and ability?

Thanks for your time anyone who answers, and I'm sure I'll have more questions later.

Im not quite sure for 1 but I read it as, "When Magtheridon becomes exhausted, HE deals 2 melee damage to target hero or ally.  So I would say mag does.

    2.  In response to your draw, you can complete Deep Sea Salvage so you put a card on top of ur deck, then draw it.

    3.  Im pretty sure that in response to your opponent dealing damage you can prevent the damage.  Ill wait for Bluerider or Aragorn to confirm this though.

Using Armor to prevent damage does not use the chain.

304.2 If a preventable damage packet (408) would be dealt to a hero, that hero’s controller may exhaust one of his or her armor with 1 or more DEF to prevent (717) that much damage from that packet. If that packet would still deal damage to that hero, that player may exhaust another armor, and so on. This doesn’t use the chain.

    3. Preventing damage does not use the chain. You prevent damage with a special type of replacement modifier called prevention modifier.

To prevent damage such a modifier has to be there before the damage would be dealt, and then waits for damage to prevent or it stops existing when its durability is over. Armors however are only exhausted the moment the damage would be dealt to prevent it.

    1. Regardless of who actually deals damage, the target is chosen by the controler of the ability when the trigger is placed on the stack.  So yes, raiding players could make Mag smack himself.

Jadorel, 70 Night Elf Druid, 44/0/17 spec, Agamaggan server; raiding character.
Sethala, 55 Blood Elf Mage, 5/41/0 spec, Rivendare server; PvP character.

    2. There is no priority window in between the ready step and the draw step. There is, however, a priority window inside the ready step. This is before you have drawn for the turn. So, you could complete Deep Sea Salvage during this priority window in order to then draw that card during your draw step.

As a note, you cannot respond to the draw itself. The actual drawing of the card for the turn doesn't use the chain.

Awesome, thanks for the help everyone.  I have another question now about Hammer of Justice.  If you HoJ an ally or hero with a tap ability and they use the ability in response, do they still not ready on their next turn and would you draw a card? Or does the spell fail because they are no longer a legal target? (I'm right in assuming you can't use an ability that exhausts something on something that is already exhausted, correct?)

Re: Taking Mags stuff, using Deep Sea Salvage, and preventing fatal combat damage with armor...

An exhausted character is indeed a legal target for Hammer of Justice. To see why, we need to look at the exact text of the card.
    Official Card Reference:
Hammer of Justice, 2, Paladin (Azeroth-68C)
    Instant Ability—Protection
Exhaust target hero or ally. It can't ready during its controller's next ready step. <p> Draw a card.
The important part here is the target description, which I have highlighted. The target description is simply "hero or ally". The card does not require you to target a ready character. If it did, the target description would be "ready hero or ally".
