Ok, we’ve seen a report from two out of towners that showed for the event, thank you Creamstout and Twylite, now for a local’s view on the subject.
It was freaking awesome!!!
What, you want more? Ok.
21 folks showed up to Tucson’s Continental Q on the 28th of June, 9 from Phx and 12 locals. Josh was nice enough to volunteer to judge/run the whole thing and we had a back up judge in Jon, “the guy” that works at the store we all know and love, Nemesis games. We did get started about 30 minutes late, seems like a few locals refused to listen to me for the past few weeks as to when the event was going to occur, couple of our travelers though they were going to be late, but were not.
After everything was said and done Josh had a quick players meeting and we got started on our 5 rounds to a top 8 split. I was playing a newly modified Kuano Feral druid, it took 3rd at our past Sun tourney, so I figured it could get me in the top 12 or so for this one. Looking at the field we had that was all I needed to get the Q as most of the Phx folks are Q’s due to Honor. SO let’s get to it….
Round 1 vs. Rick (Alliance token druid)
I don’t think I’d seen Rick play this one down here in Hippyville. The first game went pretty quick, the prep, a form, 2 pred strikes and an Alamo opening hand spells trouble for folks usually….. it was quick win. Game 2 was a little different, II say a little if him kicking the snot out of me without much happening on my side. AN early Nat order crushed a cower and that was about all she wrote… ouch. Game 3 however, that’s when things really went downhill. 3 total insect swarms hit the cow, there were two on him almost the entire time… not cool. I put a total of 3 damage on him the entire game, stupid cow…
0-1
Round 2 vs. Dani (Homebrew Daspien)
This is an upgraded version of Dani’s weekly Rogue; unfortunately for her it wasn’t quite enough to do the job this time. I didn’t need to flip for either of these games to get the extra health, a few timely shreds took care of the lower end ferocity folks and when 2 Alamo are on the board it starts to hurt to hit my Hero….
1-1
Round 3 vs. Joe (Labe)
Ringleader Kuma 3 games, 3 tight games, only one player left standing after it. It was me. No other info stayed in my head for this match, I’m just glad I got through it.
2-1
After this round I was sitting at 11th place, not where I was hoping for, but still heading in a positive direction, so who do I get placed against…… Jay, with him sitting at the number one spot, using my Kil’zin deck again from last week……
Round 4 vs. Jay
If I get a good start and can keep some pressure on I can usually get through this match up. Jay has been riding high with this deck all day and has really been enjoying the hell out of playing it. He got me to 35 damage in game one and 31 damage in game two, you gotta love that flip, let me tell ya! They were well done games, no real misplays on either side. Jay is really getting back into the groove of things and although he won’t have this deck again I think he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with locally this summer and fall.
3-1
Round 5 vs. Mark
Alliance Warlock….. lots of discard, voidfire wand…. the works. First game was a complete blowout. I think Mark got a bad draw while I pulled the nuts. Double pred strikes, Alamo, a prep and form in the opener…. He went fatal when I had 1 damage on the cow. Game 2 was exactly the fraking opposite, I drew nothing, mulliganed into nothing, and mark got what he needed, time mostly to set up the wand and smack me around, I only got 11 total damage one him when he banished my form while hitting me with the wand….. scoop for game 3? This was much closer to a repeat of game 1, add in a Rak or two to speed things a bit. The deal breaker was when Mark rained of shadows and nothing died, he forgot about Alamo and the Snig is a druid…. As he had entered the round in 4th and I at 7th I knew we would be fine though… go me for the Q!
My main objective being met I was VERY HAPPY.. I’m going to Gen Con regardless, but it would be cooler to Q for Conts and get 2 playmats than play in the DMF and maybe get one, you know?
Top 8
Vs. Twylite
For some reason, whether it’s a fun game or a competitive one my decks always leave me out to dry against Kevin for some reason. Game one was a complete blowout….. just as he said…. Game 2 I think there was a moment where I might have started to stabilize, but not so much… Oh well… the Q it is!
SO, this is the third report of this tournament so far that has been posted, the first two don’t mention the winner…… I will fix that now. Jay, yes Jay. 2 weeks in a row and two tournies in a row with my Kil’zin deck, no more deck for you pal! He played Mark in the finals, and pulled it out in good fashion. WAY TO GO JAY!!!
A good time was had, (I hope) even though we weren’t able to get a draft going due to the lack of Drums (stupid distributors) All fo the group that is going to Gen Con is Q’d up to play and now Mark has to look seriously at getting the time and money together… I’ll post the list later as I don’t have it in front of me.
Block draft on the 12th of July for our release celebration and I just hope my flight back isn’t delayed so I’m there in time! Until next time….
