    Wub's Cursed Hexblade

    Wub's Cursed Hexblade, 2, Weapon—Dagger, Melee (1), 1 ATK, 2 Strike (Honor-182R)
(2), Destroy Wub's Cursed Hexblade >>> Destroy target ally. If an opponent went first this game, put a card with the same name as that ally from a graveyard into your party.

This uses the name that ally had as it left play. If that ally had no name, you can't retrieve a card from a graveyard. Alternately, if it was an Essence of the Martyr copying an ally, you can't retrieve a card named Essence of the Martyr; you can only retrieve a card with the same name as that ally.

My question is this - when does the ally go to the graveyard? As I read it, Destroy target ally is one sentence. Would that resolve first, putting the ally into the graveyard and then allowing me to put that same ally back into play under my control (assuming I went second)? Or would there have to be a pre-existing copy in their graveyard.

You process the text in order, and since the "If" sentence does not include targeting of any sort, you will be able to bring back that exact copy of that ally if you choose.

Is there a rules reference for that?

709.2b If the link has not been interrupted, resolve it. To do so, its controller must process its text in order. If a link tells a player to take an action, that player makes all choices for

I've had a judge spout this at me before when i've asked a similar question, their interpretation being that it happens in stages

E.g. Scouring the desert, you first shuffle your graveyard back into your deck, then after you've finished the first instruction, follow the next one.

Therefore i presume this applies similarly to Wub's, Kill an ally, once it's in the graveyard, follow the next instruction. So i'm pretty sure you can take the same one out you just killed.

    Re: Wub's Cursed Hexblade

Think of it the same as Solanian's Belongings (when your hero is a Blood Elf). Processing text in order: you put the card on top of the deck, then draw a card, the top card of your library which was just put there. Hexblade: you destroy the ally, moving it from in play to the graveyard, then put into play a card from that graveyard with the same name as that ally. That ally is in the grave and has the same name as itself, therefore is a legal choice.

Understandable you're looking for clarification, I was apprehensive at first too.

Does wub's cursed hexblade allow you to bring back a totem that you destroyed with it?

    Re: Wub's Cursed Hexblade

I would say yes because wub is looking for "...a card with the same name as that ally...".  Since it is not looking for an ally in the graveyard than the ability with the same name could come into play as long as your opponent went first.

    Re: Wub's Cursed Hexblade

Wouldn't it need to say "...a card with the same name as that TARGET ally..." to get back a totem?

    Re: Wub's Cursed Hexblade

    No.
    Comprehensive Rules v3.2:
712.3a If text says to do something to “that [thing],” it’s done to whatever [thing] was last explicitly mentioned in that text, even if “that [thing]” doesn't currently describe it (but see 415.10a).
So the target ally that you destroy is the [thing] that was last explicity mentioned, so "that ally" refers to the targeted ally.  So you can put a card with the same name as the Totem into play, even though "that ally" does not describe the Totem.

    Re: Wub's Cursed Hexblade

my opponent has Greench in play and Undercity in play.. he went first in this game ..... if I use Wub's Cursed Hexblade to destroy the Greench, he may remove from the graveyard (with Undercity) the Greench before I take control of him ?

    thanks

    Re: Wub's Cursed Hexblade

No, the card is resolving and you cannot respond in the middle of a link in the chain.

Wub destroys first then checks if your opponent went first before putting that ally back into play.  This is all one link and you cannot respond to the destruction before it is brought back.
