Ok the secret in making New Englanders interested in anything is championships....case in point Boston Celtics.
I think Boston needs a DREAM MACHINE CHAMPIONSHIP.....
As you might guess, these things aren't handed out like halloween candy. I have done a lot of research on events that are held in the Mass/CT/RI/VT/NH/ME area. There isn't a ton of regular activity (compared to some of the other highly populated areas in the NE). I'm not sure if Boston is ready for a DMF...a Realm Championship, now that might be something that the New England area could prove that they are ready for the big time. :)

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)
In regards to the DMF: Boston: "If you build it they will come"
Not to knock DMF: Orlando but alot of the players in that room where from out of town. Plus the event would be close enough where players from New England, NY, and probably NJ would want to make the trip.
The problem for WoW in New England is that no one prefers to play a game once a week when they can play another game like Magic and have their options available in playing it almost 7 days a week. Not only that but if that player decides to become more competitive he or she can look up the Organized Play schedule and budget their time and money for said high level events. All we need is a few good stores to offer tournaments some on fridays, some on Saturdays, some on Sundays and we might be able to have some growth to the area.

Have you checked out the sales number for your products in the Northeast? While sanctioned activity is extremely low, there are a number of casual player whose venue of choice is their kitchen counter. Many of the players I've met in my area are not willing to attend regionals an hour away or DMFs that require flying, but if you have one within driving distance they will show up. And who knows, maybe they'll end up enjoying high level competition so much they'll start attending more events? There are also a couple of players who are sticking with Magic not because it's more fun but because the player-base is bigger. I just did a 4-man WoW draft last at my store last night and there was a 10-man Magic draft at the same time. 2 of the players playing Magic also play WoW from time to time. Give them a reason to switch permanently.
Also, a DMF Boston will attract players from the NY/PA/NJ area and there are a ton of competitive players there. If you can get people to fly out to Seattle, Boston shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)
Seattle had less than 100 players.
Not sure they really succeeded at making players fly there :)
The guys would play if there was something?
Yet there are some tourneys, if they'd play in those, wouldn't there be more tourneys created etc...?
There can't be tournaments without a player base, so saying to create a player base you need to do tournaments doesn't seem wise.
Tho a DMF isn't made for local players, it's just a way to advertise in said zone, so maybe DMF Boston is the solution to show how good the game is.
~
Best ranking at weekly draft : 4th (5 showed up and I got a bye :D) Number of weekly drafts : 44 and counting. 0-4 drop at worlds (pairings suck) Once won a game in DMF, my opponent didn't show up.

A DMF (in the U.S. at least) is made somewhat for local players but more in a regional sense than in a specific city sense. Orlando drew a lot of people from the Southeast who could do a 2-8 hour drive. There are maybe 30-40 people who travel to DMF's in the U.S. regardless of location. The rest of the turnout draws in from the region.
West Brom for the Premiership Latest Result: Wigan 2 WBA 1 (still DFL) 2nd highest-ranked Limited player in Northwest Brooklyn #2 Lifetime Honor scrub (#1 in '08!) Lifetime Regional/RCQ match record: 88-64 (57.9%)

Seattle turnout was fine seeing how it was Seattle. You weren't there, but the excitement level of that DMF was as high as any DMFs I've attended.
The player base already exists here, it's just that the player activity is extremely low. In my previous post, I asked Mike to analyze the sales number in this area to see if the numbers there are more in-line with my experience.

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)
I really can't imagine the turnout for DMF Boston to be any less than DMF Philly, and it would probably be a bigger turnout. All of the NY/NJ/CT/MA players would show up, and that's not such a bad number.
I mean, you talk of Realm Champs... well yeah, go take a look at ours. I say "ours" in a literal sense because I'm including the NY/CT players. Go see how many of the players in the NE Realm Champs are the same people flying out to almost every single DMF around the USA. Just south of that in PA was the NJ area Realm Champs, and most of the rest were found there. If anything, we deserve a DMF Boston simply because of the dedication the NE Players have given this game! Hell, we'd probably lure out some of the Canadian players! That'd be an interesting twist.

But Philly has a larger local player base than Boston and isn't NYC closer to philly than it is to Boston? (just checked it, a little over an hour vs. 4 hours). So I don't know if your assumption that Boston wouldn't get less of a turnout than Philly. Now Boston vs. Seattle, that might be more of an interesting comparison. Believe me, I have the numbers and am crunching the heck out of them to make sure that the hotbeds get a Realm Champs this coming season. If we spreadout the Winterspring and the ... non-Winterspring (yea, it's late, shoot me) Champs, I might be a more telling number of the player density in the NE. Now, I'm not sure if the NE players deserve a DMF more than any other area, but they are definitely towards the top of the list. We have one on the burner for this fall. Depending on when it falls (btw can someone lend me a month, sometime between OCT and NOV), it might have to be in a warm weather climate. If it doesn't make it up there, the Realm Champ attendance would go far in furthering Boston's case.
Wow...that was way longer than I thought it would be.
PS Damien - have you moved yet? What store are you playing at?

Philly is more like 2 hours from NYC but both are close enough to drive in a morning and far enough that we'd have to get a hotel rather than commute. Also, the actual playerbase of NYC proper is fairly small. It's only even when we draw in a dozen or so people from Long Island and another dozen from NJ that we get 32+ player Regionals/RCQ's.

Did this thread just get hijacked by the person starting it?
Can we get an update as to what UDE is doing to get local stores (I mentioned 2 earlier in the thread) to run sanctioned events? Will there be ANY local events soon besides the ones at YMG?

This week a New Gaming Store Opened in Worcester called Over the Edge Games. (Huge Magic dealer on ebay)
Located 315 Grafton St.
Store hours are as follows:
Mon-Tuesday 11:00 to 6:00 PM
Wed 11:00 to 8:00 PM
Thurs 11:00 to 6:00 PM
Friday 11:00 to 8:00 PM, later if a tourney is in progress
Saturday 11:00 to 8:00 PM or later if a tourney in progress
Sunday 12:00 to 5:00 PM
We went there this week and offered to help them start running WOW TCG tournaments (Tony has T.O. and Level 1 judge)
But they declined the help and are suppose to be starting doing WOW Battlegrounds Thurs. Nights.
Will try to keep updated , but anyone with Interest should probably contact the Store (Joe)
or Chris (508) 757-6411
Hope this Helps

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)
Any idea when they are going to start the Battlegrounds? I'm glad that there is a store that will be offering tournaments now. I'll hopefully be able to get there in time from work...

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)
Im in the process of moving and will be fully moved in come Aug 1st. As for a store to play in, right now Im on the fence. Obviously Your Move Games is the closest (as I myself will also be living in Somerville) but I feel the support for the game there is very small, plus the location itself is questionable. I've been spreading the seed of doubt that we will be doing our draft practice and constructed testing literally in my apt for two weeks prior to Nats. After that, I'll go exploring for store options... I just don't have time or patience before Nats to do it.
I really enjoy places like GamingETC for the size, overall cleanliness, etc. and I like Kings Games because I like that they offer computers downstairs as well. My dream scenario store is formulating in my head and I know what I want, but can I get it? My friend used to run a place in the Fitchburg/Leominster area for the locals and if he had made a few small changes to it, the IDEA was right... his execution just wasnt always spot on, and there's not enough people around here to get it going.
Now, if he had done that same idea in the boston area....

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)
Ok guys here is an update on the Over the edge games store in Worcester Ma.
Constructed tournaments starting Thursday July 17th at 7PM. Entrance fee is $5-$10 more likely to be $5. The store will be open to midnight on Thursday which is nice so there is no rush. Also the owners are already working on getting their PTO and hobby league stuff. Maybe Gwon you can help speed up this process for them (overnight shipping on the kit?)
Also the owner was very open to running drafts for players if there is a demand for it so WoW could be more than just a one night a week tournament. He said the open days I believe were Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.
Personally I would like to thank Tony P. for his diligence in really taking charge of the dilemma in New England and starting the initiative to breath some life back into the hobby league level of tournament play in New England. Hopefully this is the beginning of something good.
On a separate note if you plan on going to the tournament on Thursday respond and if you need any cards I'll be bringing my trade binder as I have most of the goodies from HFI in spades.
