Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)

I know that you guys have expressed concerns about WoW OP in your area.  Can you answer a few questions for me?

1 - Where do you play, when you do play?  At a store, at your houses, at a coffee shop?

2 - What kinds of events would you like seen run in your area (Battlegrounds, Regionals/Realms, Weekly drafts)?

3 - What stores have you been to that don't run events?

Let's see about reinvigorating this area.

Shouldn't this be in the OP area?

JK - maybe they can get something going up there to end the pack buying strike :)

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)

    1. I used to play in Waltham, MA on Thursdays, but it was more playtesting than anything and its pretty much stopped since Realms.  The Smash and Bash in Manchester is the first event I've known of in New Hampshire in forever.

    2. Lets see, how about all of the above?  More Regionals/Realm Qualifiers would be nice and it would be nice to have weekly events like Battlegrounds or Drafts within  a decent distance from me (anywhere in the area of Manchester, NH to Boston would be nice). It would allow people to be more prepared for bigger events (I know Damien is going to try to get people for draft practice at some point).

    3. Lets see, pretty much any store I've been to that hasn't been YMG doesn't run events. This includes the Silver Dragon in Amherst, NH who used to see cards, but doesn't really anymore. I guess it would help to give Rob some more initiative to start offering more events than Sneak Previews and Regionals/RQs.  He did talk about offering events at TJs Collectibles in Milford, MA, but I haven't seen anything come of that.

And before anyone makes the argument that there are events offered in New England, there's a difference between being in the heart of New England (like Boston) and being 30 minutes away from NYC (like Gaming Etc. is).

For the record, Gamingetc is more like a 90 minute drive away from NYC without traffic, not 30.

Its still closer to the New York border than it is anywhere near Boston...

Ummm...I wouldn't exactly consider Gaming Etc. to be the hot-bed of WoW activity that your post seems to indicate that it is.

Also, the "New York border" and "New York City" are two completely different things.  I live 10 minutes away from Gaming Etc, and I could get to the "border" in about 20 minutes.  New York City, on the other hand, is a much longer drive for us, as bunklore already mentioned.  Personally, I would be pretty excited to see support start happening in Westchester County (NY)...which is pretty much that border I'm talking about.  I think that would be a great middle ground between NYC and us "Southern" New Englanders.

I think you'd be better off focusing on New England rather than Westchester because NYC folks generally aren't going to leave the city for regular tournaments and Westchester is pretty suburban so it's harder to have a single area to focus around. If anything, something in Westchester would be more likely to draw folks from North Jersey than NYC. If I didn't have a car, the 4-5 of us from NYC who travel to tournaments between Philly, NJ and CT would probably rarely if ever leave the city for WoW.

Re: Ping: New England players (aka BigTroll...etc)

    Mike, thanks for the attention.

    1. I play at a store called GamingETC in Stratford, CT. I also frequent Kings Games in Brooklyn, NY often because of the dearth of events in this state.

    2. Regionals and weekly drafts. Battlegrounds will come once a steady user base is established (so basically all 3).

Regarding regionals... It would be nice if regionals in CT are scheduled earlier in the season. The reason for this is because early in the season, most players are still working toward getting qualified and would make the extra effort to drive to this state I call a pit stop between NYC and Boston. Last year, our regional events attracted players from both NYC and Mass region (turnout were in the 20s). This year, our realm qualifier was the very last qualifier of the season and the only people who attended were locals (the turnout was 7). I also know that the PTO for our state is different from the PTO in NYC, so scheduling would require coordination on a PTO level and may be out of UDE's hands. Or is it?

Weekly drafts... Would it be a good idea to promote this format by establishing prize support for draft like it's being done for Constructed-format Battlegrounds? Speaking of prize support, how about creating an incentive for merchants to promote your product? Let's say if a store is able to do 10 drafts with 6+ people in a span of 3 months, they get dibs on exclusive stuff like being able to run a Spectral Safari or something. At GamingETC, they are ambivalent about most WoW events; they have no information regarding special events such as the Ogre Smash & Bash and the recent Realm qualifier Battleground weekend. They are ambivalent because the WoW playerbase is so small; but the playerbase is so small because there are no stores giving WoW serious support.

    3. I've visited several stores in CT. There is one called Heroes Comics in Norwalk. They use to run events when HoA came out, but then they stopped when people stopped coming. Norwalk is close to Stratford though, so I would think the playerbase is one and the same (we get a regular drafter who lives in Norwalk). There is another called DJ Comics in Wallingford in central CT. I know there's a couple players there who are very casual players. They would not make the trek to Stratford but if there are events there I'm sure that would lure them out. GamingETC is a great store, but perhaps CT regional events could be scheduled at other stores to try to draw out new players? The PTO might not want to risk "wasting" a premiere event on untested locations. Perhaps you could allot a few more events for our PTO just so he could try to expand the playerbase here. Some areas I would suggest would be Danbury, which is near the NY border near Newburgh and could attract some players there. Springfield, MA could attract players from Northern CT, and I know there are a couple of semi-hardcore players in that area. It would also draw in the players in Boston. New Haven, Waterbury, and Meriden are also good spots. I would also suggest someplace in Eastern CT near Rhode Island, but no one lives out there and I'm not even familiar enough with the area to suggest anything.

This is probably more than you can chew, but I hope it helps!

I like the thinking here. Something along these lines makes a lot of sense. Coming from the other side of it, I play at a store that actually does support WoW. We have a weekly draft, but it's very much because we work hard to make it happen. It doesn't seem like something that has much support from UDE at all.

Anything that gets players to go to their local store instead of just playing at home is a good idea. I'm very lucky to just randomly live in an area with a store that happens to support WoW. I've talked to more than one person in other areas of the country who want to play, but there just isn't anything for them to hook into.

I have no idea where to go in eastern Massachusetts for WoW other than the highly occasional event that occurs at Your Move in Somerville.

I know there's are some stores in the area trying to get tournaments going. The store that held the Smash and Bash said that they want to start doing tournaments, but right now the turnout isn't great.  Considering that there were only 3 teams today, though oddly enough the person I had asked to be my partner for it last weekend actually showed up and we won the event. To see how barren the tournaments are here, there was a group that drove all the way from Maine for the event today.

I'd be willing to host events starting in August right in my kitchen/living room.
