Re: The Call of Battle: Upcoming Cons and a Downloadable Demo

Interesting, the few games I played me or my opponent would be able to keep Lotherin away from  Ruby. Basically sending Gorebelly charging in and Lotherin backing up as support and mostlikely sitting on a VP at tick 5. To improve Lotherin's survivability, I did have to hide him behind Gorebelly once. Remember enemy figures block your guy's line of sight, I don't think it'll come up all that often in the demo, but when the number of character's start going up it'll be very important.

Random Stat of the Post: Ruby's chances of killing Lotherin with Arcane Blast and Fire Blast: 25.923%

So far, I'm liking how this is turning out.  Very different results using the same figures.  This confirms that tactics and play styles will come in to play.  Do you go aggro or do you hold back and sit on the defensive?

I agree this game is playing really well. So far the horde sides won all my games but ruby can kill Loth rather easily so it can go either way. (Helps with the action bars :P) The one question I do have so far is for Loth's crit on his attack on the 1damage aoe around himself or the target? I know the heal 1 is around him just not sure about the damage one.

Lotherin's crit is centred on himself.

Just to see if you all are playing this the way I did, lets say its turn 4 and Ruby just attacked setting her personal clock to turn 7.  Then on turn 5 Gorebelly moves in and attacks (setting his clock to turn 8, but that is not relevant to the question), before Gorebelly rolls his dice can Ruby use Ice Barrier?  I said yes, and there are many reasons to assume that, but the rulebook is not clear and there are a few reasons to say no.  Anyone know?

I say why not. It would put her clock to 8 (cost of Ice Barrier is 1 tick). It's a React card, so it can be used during other player's turns. And the requirement of being targetted by an attack is met.

What are the reasons why you would say no?

Well, when you put it that way my reasons to say no, look even weaker than they did before ; )  Mostly, it was that her clock is not "ready".  That she is "inactive".

Yeah, nevermind, the more I think about it the more it doesn't make sense, the good news is that is how we played it.....

Yeah, it states nothing in the rule book about not being able to use a react ability even if your clock is not ready, I played it last night with just being able to use it in responce to a declared attack.

Yes, that's how I kept ruby alive long enough to take out the priest.  And if she survived I'd use flash heal if available, because of her lack of armor against gorebelly.  All you have to do is announce that you're going to use Ice barrier before any dice are rolled.  It's the same as using an instant in response to something in Magic or even the WoW TCG.  Once the dice are rolled the ability is resolved and can't be reacted to, anytime before the dice are rolled, you're good to go.

Re: The Call of Battle: Upcoming Cons and a Downloadable Demo

Let me preface this by saying that I have never played any miniatures game before today.

I just got finished playing a few test games with a buddy and every one we played hinged on Ruby.  Perhaps it's simply the fact that we're only looking at 4 characters with the demo, but Ruby just felt overly powerful compared to the others.  I played both with and against her and felt a little cheap nailing Gorebelly with an Arcane Blast/Fire Blast combo.

Then again, it may have simply been a matter of lucky die rolls as well.  Given the results we saw, though, we were both left wondering if perhaps Arcane Blast is a little under-costed or given too much range.  Even with Charge up, Ruby can outdistance Gorebelly after all but killing him.

Perhaps even raising her Honor value would help to ease that overpowered feeling.

Oh well.  That's the impression of this noob :)

    * I still thought the game was fun to play, though.

Question, Gorebelly's execute card doesn't say what type of card it is. The other cards say Attack, Instant, Heal, or React.

I would think it's an attack, so you couldn't use your regular attack then Execute.

    What do you guys think?

Re: The Call of Battle: Upcoming Cons and a Downloadable Demo

Execute isn't an attack.  "Attack" implies using the mechanics for rolling dice and applying damage against armor or resist.  It's an ability that just generates a conditional effect.

The tick cost (1) makes it your main action for the turn, so you won't be able to use your main attack in the same turn.  (Notice that all of the instants have a tick cost of 0).

I should of said main action...

But I still think the card should say something. (just not sure what)

Re: The Call of Battle: Upcoming Cons and a Downloadable Demo

I had discussion with many firends over this, and here's the result:

The main rule for action bar cards is that they replace your main action. Instant and React are two exceptions, and both will be specialy identified. The fact the card is not identified as an attack will also help avoid a possible enemy Gorebelly's Taunt and similar future limitations to attacks.

Note that Execute is still very useful, because it lets you ignore a possible very bad roll (especialy against Hodoon and other characters with high defense), and auto kills for 1 tick. You will be able to move two more and attack again on the next tick! Very powerful if you ask me!
