My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

Here's what I have for the deck so far.  Right now, I'm not sure whether or not I want to go Horde or Alliance.  These are the cards I own and too bad for me, I don't have any Tankatronic Goggles or else I would add those.  Let me know what you guys think.  I'm currently unsure about my Abilities and Resources.. and whether my deck has room for Stronghold Gauntlets.

    Grand Marshal Goldensword

    Weapons (12):
    4x Brutal Gladiator's Greatsword
    4x Vindicator's Brand
    3x Merciless Gladiator's Greatsword
    1x Gorehowl

    Equipment (21):
    4x Bonefist Gauntlets
    3x Doomplate Shoulderguards
    3x Slayer's Waistguard

    2x Ornate Adamantium Breastplate

    Abilities (12):
    4x Resolute Aura
    4x Glimmer of Hope
    4x Hammer of Justice
    4x Penance
    2x Owned!

    Resources (13):
    4x Eye of the storm

What is the reason to play ret hero if you're not even playing ret talents? Rather go holy with this build, or just add Crusader Strikes.

Re: My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

Surely the reason to go Ret now is:

I would also then add in Crusader Strike.
It is a bit on the expenssive side though IMO, so it might be a good idea to take advantage of the secondary function and rez a Seal or Judgement.

In my Ret pally deck I'm using Seal of Righteousness, and it works really well, but 4 copies is not quite enough, so I'm thinking about switching faction, so I can get some of that Solanian's Belongings goodness.

But Swordsmith Hanso also works quite well. So ...

First, I think Crusader Strikes are bad.  The cost just doesn't justify the damage done.  Avenging Wrath is something I should be looking at.. same with Seal of the Righteous.  Divine Storm is definitely something I'll be getting from Scourgewar.

So thus, back to the original question minus the Crusader Strike.  What would be a better abilities combination?  Or do they look alright?  Same with my resource selection/count.

Re: My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

You are saying that ~8 damage instantly with the cost of 5 resources is bad, not even concidering that it also gives your seal back? You should always use Seals of Righteousness, since they sure pack a punch.

Secondly for your equipment, I wouldn't play Ornate Adamantium Breastplate, just because it's so goddamn expensive to be nothing else but armor. Also I wouldn't play 4x Resolute Auras, since you don't usually have more than 1-2 equipments + your weapon on the field, so it is pretty much useless on those situations, and it can be simply interrupted. Just go 2-3 concentration auras and 2x Resolute.

And then there's the fact that you play Glimmers, the only interrupts paladins have. They are so unreliable, as you cannot do anything to abilities not played to target cards in play you control, and even if they do, you can be easily interrupted while trying to interrupt, since you don't have concentration aura..., (Penance is awesome *** to play instantly on your opponents' turn).

Edit: As for the resources, I would play some stable quests that always give you a card or two. Quests like Hogger and Warm Welcome surely worked well in the past, but you don't want to pick those quests when your hand is empty, and nothing's on the table.

Things like Pappy, Bringer of Death etc. utterly destroy you if you plan on having +5 cards in the table before being able to finish. That's why ret pallys just grab their weapon, few armors to shield themselves with from Blizzard, and strike their foe to death. End of story. :|

I would use Divine Riposte as one of the abilities, but that is just me.

Re: My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

I have to agree with R60 here.
Glimmer of Hope just doesn't do it for me.
In a Mage heavy meta it might be better, but I cut it from my deck because it didn't deal with my actual problems.

Which mainly is discard and equiptment hate from allies like Zalan Ragewind or The Ironbanes.

I also run Awenging Wrath and THAT is a lot of fun - especially since I run Hope Ender as a finisher.
I've actually considered dropping CS, maybe to 2, because I agree that it doesn't really work that well.

But I have been running Thud which is amazing against Zalan. And it would be good versus interrupts as well.

Re: My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

Alright, here's my newest update to the deck:

    Grand Marshal Goldensword

    Weapons (14):
    4x Brutal Gladiator's Greatsword
    4x Vindicator's Brand
    4x Merciless Gladiator's Greatsword
    2x Gorehowl

    Equipment (16):
    4x Bonefist Gauntlets
    3x Tankatronic Goggles
    3x Berserker Bracers
    2x Slayer's Waistguard
    2x Doomplate Shoulderguards
    2x Boots of the Resilient

    Abilities (16):
    3x Seal of Righteousness
    3x Concentration Aura
    3x Divine Storm
    3x Penance
    2x Resolute Aura
    2x Owned!

    Resources (14):
    4x Big Game Hunter
    4x Akama's Promise
    2x A Warm Welcome
    2x Orders From Lady Vashj
    2x Auchindoun Spirit Towers

From my personal experience, I found that Seal of Righteousness just wasn't worth it most games.  But since Scourgewar is coming out and Divine Storm will have a use, the extra +1 might be worth it in combination with Brutal Gladiator's preperation costs.  For now, I have 2 Gorehowls in there as my game enders.. but I'm not entirely sure about that.  10 cost is really steep for Paladins since they run abilities as well.. so I was thinking of maybe taking them out entirely for Avenging Wrath (I think it's a great card, but I'm not finding room).  I managed to get ahold of some better tank heads and I chose to switch out the Gluttonies for Akama's Promise because I was having more success with them.

What do you guys think now?

Re: My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

As for your decklist now, it's almost the same as mine, with few exceptions.

I wouldn't play 4x Merciless Gladiator's Greatswords, since they are 6 cost and have 4 strike cost, and usually don't work that fine. Having something like one-off Merciless and few other weapons such as Demonslayer (not for the ability, but for the 5ATK and 1 strike cost).

Otherwise it seems just fine, atleast in my opinion...

Do you need four Bonefist gauntlets? You've 9x equipment with cost of 2, you might want to remove one of those to get space for an another card, along with 1-2 Merciless Gladiator's swords.

Re: My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

What are your win conditions?  Do you use Gorehowls as well?
I have 4x Hope Ender and 4x Obsidian Edged Blade to play with.. but no Demonslayers.

The Bonefists are great and cheap, and allow me to swing with higher cost weapons for free essentially.  I think they're the best 2-drop gloves you can have.  Other contenders are Gauntlets of Vindication and Stronghold Gauntlets.  Not to mention they're there to work with Brutal Glad's sword so I can pick up the speed and start swinging with seals.

The Merciless Gladiator's Swords are great because they offer great splash damage.  They're dangerous when they come out and they're dangerous to keep on the field.. especially if your opponent is running smaller allies to buy time.  It swings for 7 (+effect) and does 1 damage to everything on their side of the field.

Re: My first attempt at a Ret Paladin solo deck

Uhh ohh... Depending on the metagame of your town, I would concider having few Hammers of The Divine in side, they're not that main-deck friendly, as they don't work against solo and so on. With the massive amounts of mages in my town's meta, I will play atleast 2 or 3 of those in my side, as they knock down Weldon, as well as his peasants, not to mention Myriams and Dimzers and so on....
