Work in progress - PIT LORD RAID BOSS.

Hey guys, you might recall me from WoWMinisMods.com (which was unfortunately hacked and destroyed :() with the work I did with ShunFX on the Arathi Basin map and a couple of raid projects there such as Leotheras the Blind and Terestian Illhoof.

Ive been looking for a project to work on, something on the lines of miniature converting which ive been longing to do but havent found inspiration until last night.
Chopping up some D&D minis, ive got the framework done for an Anhillian demon or PitLord.

Unfortunately I dont have a camera right now, and I dont have any greenstuff to help sculpt this baby into life (Shops open tomorrow yay!), but as it stands it will take up 4 hexes and tower over the other figures.
Scale wise, this is too small for Magtheridon let alone Brutallus, but is rightly sized for the typical PitLords you see in outlands, guarding forgecamps etc.

With that in mind, Ive planned a raid encounter set in a cavern in outlands where a group of raiders seeks to down the Pitlord.

This hasnt been playtested, Im putting this out here for people to comment with ideas and hoping get to playtest themselves (since im short on time as it is :( )
This system uses an Automated boss with cards drawn to dictate its actions.

Here we go :) (EDITING AS COPY PASTING is destroying my paragraphs)
    BOSS RULES

Health 12 x Number of raiders
    Armor 3
    Resist 3
    Movement 4

BOSSFIGHT - The Pitlord cannot be force moved or force ticked up, nor have its movement limited or hindered by any means.

RANDOM ACTIVATION - Whenever the boss activates, draw a card from the deck and perform that action, if it is an Aggro based attack, move the Pitlord its movement of 4 hexes to be adjacent to the figure with Aggro.
At the end of tick 10, all cards will have been used and are reshuffled to form the deck again.

AGGRO - The Pitlord is Immune to Taunt and uses a simplified aggro method.
The nearest figure within 4 spaces gains the initial aggro counter, if there are multiple randomly decide. Figures with Taunt or Protector gain priority.
If a figure heals 3 or more wounds in a single heal, they gain the aggro counter.
If a figure deals 3 or more damage in a single attack, they gain the aggro counter.
If a figure uses an ability with the keyword Aggro, or has the Taunt / Protector ability, they gain the aggro counter if their attack deals damage.

RANDOM TARGETING - Some attacks ignore aggro and target random targets, based on a priority.
Take all the character cards of all figures that are eligible to be targeted and shuffle them, drawing one to be the selected target.

ENRAGE - The Pitlord gets stronger the longer the fight goes, at the end of ticks 5 he gains +1 Magic Attack, and at the end of ticks 10 he gains +1 Phsycial Damage. This stacking bonus cannot be removed in any way other than killing the boss.

    PITLORD ACTIVATION CARDS

    MELEE ATTACK
Ticks 1, Range 1, Damage 5(Physical) Crit: -1 Armor, Remove this debuff at the end of Tick 10
This target is determined by Aggro.

    CHARGE ATTACK
    Ticks 1, Range 1, Damage 5(Physical) Crit: +1 Tick
    This attack ignores Aggro.
Randomly choose a target. Target Priority Non-adjacent Figure ---> Adjacent Figure ----> Figure with Aggro
Teleport the Pitlord adjacent to that target at the closest hex, put the Aggro Counter on them, then increase that figures clock by 1 Tick.
Text: "DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HIDE FROM ME!?"

    CLEAVE ATTACK (2 in deck)
    Ticks 1, Range 1, Damage 5(Physical) Crit: +1 Damage
The target is determined by Aggro.
Turn the boss so that the figure with aggro is in one of the front 2 hexes, then perform this attack on all figures in the front 4 hexes.
Text: "ILL SWAT YOU DOWN, ANNOYING GNATS!"

    FLAME NOVA
Ticks 2, Range Unlimited, Damage 5(Fire) Crit: +1 Damage
    This attack Ignores Aggro.
All enemy figures not blocked in LoS are hit by this attack.
    Text: "BURN, BUUUUURN!"

    HATEFUL STRIKE
Ticks 1, Range Unlimited, Damage 5(Physical) Crit: +1 Damage
    This attack Ignores Aggro.
Randomly choose a target. Target Priority Adjacent without Aggro ---> Adjacent with Aggro ---> Non Adjacent
Text: A hateful strike, born of malice...

    SUMMON INFERNAL
Ticks 1, Range Unlimited, Damage N/A
    This attack Ignores Aggro
Randomly choose a target. Target Priority Figure without Aggro ---> Figure with Aggro
Spawn an Infernal Pet adjacent to the target figure, and Tick that figure up by 1.
Any number of Infernals can be in play at once.
Text: "COME FORTH, YOUR MASTER CALLS!"

    INFERNAL STATS
Health 2x initial number of raiders
    Armor 2
    Resist 2

Slam Ticks 3, Range 1, Damage 5(melee) Crit: make a 4(Fire) attack at the same target
Flame Aura Deal 1 damage to all adjacent enemies at end of ticks 5/10

    BELLOWING ROAR
Ticks 1, Range Unlimited, Damage N/A
    This attack Ignores Aggro.
Place a -1 attack / -1 Magic Counter on each enemy, remove the Counter at the end of Tick 10.
    Text: "RAAAAAAAAAAGH!"

    TAILSWIPE
    Ticks 1, Range 1, Damage 3(Physical) Crit: +1 Tick
    This attack Ignores Aggro.
Target the 4 rear hexes of the boss and perform this attack on those targets.
Any Figure that takes damage is knocked back as many squares as it was damaged.
Text: "SO THEY SEEK TO OUTFLANK ME!?"

    TERRAIN
THE LAIR OF THE PIT LORD

The lair of the Pit Lord is a cave in a volcanic area, there are 2 terrain features.
Lava Pools - These count as hindering terrain (2 movement to enter) and do 1 fire damage at the end of each tick a figures stays in it.

Giant Pillars - All elevated terrain here counts as normal for LoS, but cannot be moved onto as they reach the ceiling.
Standing behind them allows a figure to avoid damage from the Blast Nova attack.
If a figure behind it is chosen for the Charge attack, remove the Pillar.
If a pillar is adjacent in a front facing space of the boss during a Cleave attack, remove the pillar.
If all Pillars are removed from game, the raiders automatically lose - However the pitlord cannot choose to attack the pillars intentionally.

Re: Work in progress - PIT LORD RAID BOSS.

It's a modified Bulette from the D&D minis game, although it's incredibly difficult to figure out what the modifications were intended to make it look like.

I wanted to give everyone a list of all the trustworthy people who traded with me on this site, but it exceeds maximum character length. To me, that's a hopeful sign.

Re: Work in progress - PIT LORD RAID BOSS.

I've certainly seen and tipped over my share of Pit Lords, but I'll have to take it on faith that those pictures show one. I seriously couldn't tell what I was looking at against the busy and similarly colored background.

But, I don't mean to detract from the project in any way, and I applaud the efforts of individuals to find ways to keep this game interesting for them.

    Cheers!

Re: Work in progress - PIT LORD RAID BOSS.

yea those are very early pics on a really bad camera (which I dont unfortunately have a good one)

Ive attached wings, scratchbuilt a weapon, and added that "belly bling" shield thing they have around their waist.

Ill see if I can bum a camera off a friend, but its coming together nicely, the hardest part is sculpting the flames on the back, ala balrog style.

Im hoping to playtest shortly, but any suggestions ideas etc on the rules would be gladly welcomed.

I planned out the abilities to give a broad range of typical raid boss abilities (with Hateful strike being one of my favorite). And timed the random draw of abilities to always end up back on tick 1, so the deck is reshuffled and another turn commences.

Re: Work in progress - PIT LORD RAID BOSS.

Yeah, this needs revisions, based on my play-testing.  The randomly drawn deck for abilities is neat, but their costs are retardedly low.

I like the 12 health per raider and the stats, but the move 4 is irksome. Not entirely certain how three would perform, but I wont get a chance to play it again before realms.

    Cheers!

Re: Work in progress - PIT LORD RAID BOSS.

Had a playtest using 3 figures, Harnum Firebelly, Beren Embersbane and Tinker Timbletin.
Managed to get him down to 16 health from 36 before Beren was killed, too much damage for one healer (even a fast cast one like Harnum) to keep up.
Attack rolls from the boss were attrocious though, so luck favored the raiders.

I think it would be a closer game with a fourth raider added, like some damage dealer with an emergency heal.

Might have to clarify some attacks, like the Tail swipe, where he doesnt move but hits anybody to his rear (Instead of maneuvering to hit who he wants with his tail).

Maneuvering could be a player controlled option to make the most of attacks, but when its Card driven the boss just moves to keep whoever has aggro into his front hexes with the shortest move possible whenever he draws an aggro based attack.

Re: Work in progress - PIT LORD RAID BOSS.

Had playtest with friend, trying out a 5 man party

    Amon DarkHeart
    Graccus
Fillet Kneecapper (This guys is a beast)
    Vi'gor Darkbreeze
    Zaritha

With fillets stacking attack bonus, he was swinging for 9 dice at the end of it, and with 2 stacks of sunder armor up, he was chewing through the boss - makes me wonder when Onyxia comes out will she have some rule to cap his damage bonus?

My friend thought he was doomed after the first Blast Nova, as it hurt the entire raid pretty bad and didnt think he would recover in time for another big hit, but made a good comeback.
Ironically the more powerful 2nd turn blast wave didnt roll as well and wasnt as intimidating as the first one.

We played til tick 18 when they had dealt the 60 health required to kill the Boss.
After that we discussed tweaks and ideas, and then continued on as if the boss had 75 Health (15 per raider), and here we really noticed a difference.
In the three ticks that followed, the Pitlord killed 3 raiders with normal melee / single target cleave. Attacks.
Thats when it really came down to a crunch and pretty much a 1% wipe.

One thing I did screw up (Didnt have my notes on me and was going from memory - was accurate for the most but not about the infernal stats)
The infernals were weaker than planned, weak enough that the lok's voidwalker pet could offtank 2 of them slowly getting grounded down.

Accidentally did them doing 3 damage for 3 ticks instead of 5, and forgot the crit effect and EoTs5/10 ability.
Still, we found them to be a nuisance but not annoyingly dangerous though (since they were controlled) if they were adding raid damage to the bosses damage, that would have made a massive difference since most of the figures were in bad shape when the 60 health was done.
