What should I get to start playing casually?

What should I get to start playing casually?

So I'm interested in picking up whatever is needed for 2-4 players to play the game. Now I know I could just go pick up a core starter or two, but I figured with Ebay and various online shops is might be cheaper (and work out better) to piece together my own starter kit(s).

Can anyone help me out here? I'm looking to find out what I need and if anyone has links to things they may have found online that would be great.

I would also be open to buying stuff from people here too if they had 'just the thing' in mind.

I would just buy a bulk lot of commons.  Maybe 40 figs for $40 (with action bar and character cards) and not too many duplicates. I'm sure you could find a deal like that on eBay or somewhere. Don't worry about rares and epics right now. You might want UBases, but it's cheaper and easier to just use dice to keep track of hit points (d6's) and ticks (d10's).

You'll want to get a few maps. As your local shop that carries minis is they have any. 2-3 double-sided maps will keep you going for several months. It's best to play on a map several times, so you can revise your strategy as you get more experience. You can find some on eBay if you must buy them.

When you play, randomly hand out 10 figs to each player. Then each person should build a 3-man party, ignoring faction restrictions. If there are 2-3 of you playing, you could divvy up the figs by faction and play faction-only parties.

Let us know how it goes!

PS: I just found a collection on Ebay with some epics, rares, dice, customizable maps and some promos for cheap ($55-- ends in 20 hours, so hurry!). Go there and search for:  Warcraft Minis Collection

Sweet looks good to me. Now no one else bid on that bad boy... I can't afford much more than it's going for right now LOL

Let me know if you do NOT win that auction. I am gettin rid of my collection. I have all the commons from Spoils and most of the rares. I have some Core set figures, plus dice and ubases as well as two deluxe maps.

A great online store to use is http://www.warcraftgamingcenter.com/

They've got great customer service, excellent prices ($0.35 for commons, $2.25 for most rares!) and good selection (including dice, U-bases, Crafting cards, etc). No maps that I could find.

I've bought from them twice and I expect I'll keep using them as my main WoW Minis supplier.

Personally, I was also happy with the Deluxe starters I bought from the Core set a while ago. You can customize the maps to mimic the official maps used at various tournaments, too; a bit of sticky-tac can help to keep the tiles in place.

Great for commons, at least competitive for Rares... BUT... beware the goofy shipping prices.  They charge per fig with no cap, so if you get a large order you may be paying 2x the minis price just to ship them.
