SO, Tucson WOW had its second of three RQ’s this past Sun, the 18th of Oct. The group was really looking forward to getting together and grabbing some pts for the Champs as we are hoping to carpool and pretty good group to WHEREVER Tanaris decides to have the dang thing…. (hint, hint, OP guys)
18 players, 13 local/regulars, 4 Phx guys, and a new to us player from Sierra Vista showed up to go for the gold.
The local/regulars: Me, Fez, Colbert, Josh, Ryan, East, Dani, Jay, Joe, Mike, Rick, Robert, Mark
Phx: Nick and Brandon Draper, Andrew and Timm
Sierra Vista: Graham
After having Tuna (judge/TO for the event) redo everything in Mantis b/c he left Andrew out fo the first shot (is there a way to go back and add someone without giving them the loss other than not screwing up? Anyone?) we got under way…..
Rd 1 vs. Ryan
Ryan was playing his horde warrior rush, blood frenzy and go, go go, I had Kil’zin turn and burn. Game one, with fatal damage on the board, I start my turn, do I attack? DO I throw Skumm into him? No, before the draw I pop orders from lady V, why? I don’t know! As I then draw for the turn Ryan says, “Hey, how did you do that with a card in your hand?” “Huh? What? Oh &^$!” Wow, talk about handing someone the game! Scoop game 1 and move to game 2. My bad….
Games 2 and 3 however were basically the same, minus the gave away rules violations that is, a few timely chain purges and lots of pressure kept things going my way.
1-0
Rd 2 vs. Graham
SO, before things started today I sat down with Graham and we tried to hash out a road trip to Sierra Vista for Tucson WOW, we are going to shoot for a Sat lazy Peon tourney sometime in the near future, see if we can start a friendly rivalry and maybe jumpstart their scene a little, will keep those that care (and those that don’t, in the loop).
Graham was playing the Blue shammie from Outland. Couple of weapons (mostly axes), and some interesting critters/abilities made up most of what I saw. We chatted while playing and he is a real nice guy, I think he’ll fit right in if we can get him up here on a more regular basis to join in the fun. As nice as he was however, Kil’zin was not. He got 6 damage on my the first game and 12 the second before the traitor dealt fatal to his hero in a flurry of dagger and burn. Sorry bud, maybe next time, good to meet you!
Rd 3 Vs. East
East was running a newer, leaner, meaner DOT Lock. He was thinking of going to demonology last minute, but we got him to wait at least a week on that one.
Game one, I’m sitting at 21 damage and after I’ve thrown everything already on the board at him he sits at 26, I need 2 more to get him. I dig with For great honor not once, but twice, nothing. I go all in and use falling to corruption, leaving 2 useable resources left for the turn, 2nd card is the storm shock, and the game. Close one.
Game 2 , he has 24 damage on my hero after the start of his turn, his hero flip (1 for each attached ability) will only get my to 27, he digs, grim reach and then the flip, nice grab bud!
Game 3, ouch for East. Turn 1 gora, turn 2, 2 bloodsouls. Turn 3 is a jojo’be and a storm shock, turn 4 is lightning arc and another storm shock and the flip…
East is becoming just what I hoped he would. He is another wildcard in the group like Fez. Niether of them hold the standard thoughts on decks and the stuff they build can be really good in our meta, they make people shift how they think, I like it! Good games man.
3-0
Round 4 vs. Timm (Varanis)
So Timm had just finished a 3 game set up vs. Jay, playing another Kil’zin. He won, but it I was hoping that because Jay had taken it to 3 and just barely lost another that I could get the W. NOT SO MUCH. He got pretty much everything he needed and made no mistakes that I could see, even with a perfect draw I’m not sure if I could have turned game 1 around…. Game 2?
More of the same, except that this time Kil’zin went to sleep anyways, so it really didn’t matter whT he got, but he got the goods anyways…….. oh well. GG’s man.
3-1
Round 5 vs. Colbert
Colbert got his black Ice fully up and running a week or 2 ago and now as the time to really try it out. Starting the final round he was coming in third and I was at 4th, so while neither of us wanted to lose there wasn’t the pressure of not making the top 8.
This is what I’ll say, D*&N you Colbert! ^_^ Both games my deck gave me all kinds of stuff, I retainer bladed Weldons, I killed Myriams, then storm lightning arced Glous, the works. But it wasn’tt enough, that damn gnome took the win in 2 games. Good games man, good games.
3-2
So the top 8…..
Timm, Andrew, Colbert, Me, Mike, Joe, and both Brandon and Nick Draper.
I played Andrew in the first set of T8, he was playing Koo’zar rush. Should be a good match up for me right? Right? Not this time. I would like to thank my deck for getting me to the top 8, I would like to accept this honor for it, because it surely didn’t show up for the match. Nothing, for 2 games straight, 2 quick and fairly painless wins for Andrew. GG man.
3-3
So, 6th place and 4 pts. That puts me at 6 overall and one more local Q to play in. worst case there should always be the last chance Q on the Fri before… but let’s hope for better on the 8th of Nov, shall we?
As a side note, Timm’s Varanis took the whole vs. Andrew in the finals. Afterwards a group of us hit the house , ate, and shot the bull until midnight. Hey Mike and rick, glad you guys came down and crashed for the weekend…. Good times man.
Standard constructed this coming Sun, then the 8th for our last RQ, then Champs… will we ever know where it’s gonna be?
