Berkeley Realm Qualifiers - 10/4/08 - "You sunk my Battleship!"

Coming into this Realm Qualifiers, I was confident in my ability to psyche out my opponent, and have him or her always guessing what and where my strategy would lie.  Poker face was on, skill at randomly knowing when and where to attack honed in on one thought: TO WIN.  Prior to my first match, my friend Mark Genabe, who also happened to be the judge for the day suggested his strategy to me.  Being out of the game for so long, I decided to let him create the monster that I would pilot.  Sadly my one and only opponent of the day would be none other than my good friend, Craig Paterson (WTF is up with these pairings!?  Locals EVERY time!).  Craig has always been well versed with the game, and consistently follows the meta.  This was not a good match for me.

Looking over Mark's setup, I was already extremely worried that his setup would get dominated by the field all day.  With all five ships bordering the playing field, I immediately knew that I was in trouble.  Craig won the dice roll, and with me blindly shooting blanks into his vast sea, he was smart enough to start from the outside, in, knowing Mark had set my board up for me.  Sure enough, sinking just his Carrier and Submarine, Craig dominated me all game, and oddly enough finished me off with "I-1"... sound that out to yourself, I'm sure it'd be indicative of how badly I lost.

    This is my ship-deck list:
    Carrier:  A4-A8
    Battleship:  B1-E1
    Destroyer:  G1-I1
    Submarine:  J1-J4
    Patrol Boat:  J8-J9

My advice:  When playing Battleship, do one of two things:  Never listen to your friends, and never set up from the outside.

Yeah, way to come outta nowhere hella random and win the whole shabang XD... other than that though, I think the two real big surprises were both Survival Hunters doing really well (both probably would've made Top 8 if they didn't have to play against each other in the final round of Swiss), and Black Ice making Top 8.  Grats to Jaron for making another Top 8 with Obliveron in a Kil'zin-heavy meta!

Re: Berkeley Realm Qualifiers - 10/4/08 - "You sunk my Battleship!"

The Battleship match-up was truly epic. I'll admit, I found myself distract and looking down the table at it a few times.

Not quite as exciting as the Battleship action, but, I gotta say, I'm pretty damn happy I managed to Top 8 in my tourny showing. Even happier that I managed to place 2nd. Sad I couldn't get nail 1st and make up for the fact that my Top 8-ing was kinda fluke, but 1st place deck (Gary's?) was brutal.

Anyhow, this is one of those times I wish I knew names better. Either way, huge props to Andrew for giving me some last minute advice on my deck structure that really came through and Jaron for lending me an Ishanah (which proved key to winning one game!). Also huge props to all of my opponents for being awesome sports and great people, especially in response to my half-annoyed/half-amused torrent of obsceneties at facing three Kil'zin in a row. And to Ashley for sitting there, watching and waiting until after games to smack me and ask why I made stupid decision X. Much love. <3

Now onto a little blather about my play experience that you are free to ignore.

Black Ice proved... pretty strange. As expected, Kil'zin is not a good match-up. At all. It isn't quite as bad as I thought, but its not good by any stretch of the imagination. Establishing a board against it is a matter of being endurant enough to keep playing and hope Kil'zin's burn slows down. If you can get the Water Elemental and/or Myriam to stick, you've got a good shot at the win. Of course, getting it to stick isn't that easy when all of your highly resiliant Protectors explode to  Shaman burn. :p

OK. Any more details available? How many people showed? What were the top 8 decks (not lists)?

    Cheers.

Yeah, any extra info would be cool. I was out of town and missed it, so how did people do? Who took home the Invites, and who top 8'd?

Any good news from Team WAT?

Re: Berkeley Realm Qualifiers - 10/4/08 - "You sunk my Battleship!"

Really wish I'd taken notes or had better name memory. From what I recall.

21 attended. Lot Kil'zin's and Desecrators. Traitor Warrior and Rip/Flip make an appearence as well. Few other odds and ends (Obliveron, Morn Walks-the-Path, Black Ice, etc).

Top 8 (and I apologize here for my memory) is something like...

    Gary (Kil'zin)
    Sean (Lionar)
    Jaron (Obliveron)
    Andrew B. (Black Ice) <-- Me ^_^
    [Name is escaping me] (Fallenstar)
    [Name is escaping me] (Kil'zin)
[Name and deck is escaping me]
[Name and deck is escaping me]

Gary and myself took the invites home.

    Not too familiar with who Team WAT is, sadly. ;_;

Man. Next time, I'm bringing a notebook.

Re: Berkeley Realm Qualifiers - 10/4/08 - "You sunk my Battleship!"

I was either 7th or 8th (survival huntard), other slot was desecrator control (who went amazing 5-0 in swiss and lost first round to kilzin he had beaten earlier in the day)

I lost to the guy who took the whole thing down(according to the tournament results posted) he curve stomped me both games. tripple dagger tech and perfect draws. i mulled both games and didnt get the traps/bloody welcomes so he just did whatever he wanted and i stood there and took it.

At least my 1 pack had a scratch 'n sniff, so i at least paid for my gas money and entry fees!
