Gift of Nature + Retainer Kedryn: Destroy vs Fatal Damage?

    Gift of Nature:
    Ongoing:
Allies in your party can’t be destroyed by fatal damage.
At the end of each turn, destroy all allies in your party with fatal damage.

    Retainer Kedryn:
Scryer Reputation (Can't put Aldor cards in your deck.)
Stealth: (Can't protect against this character.)
When Kedryn deals combat damage to an ally, destroy that ally.

    ---
I have a question regarding Fatal Damage vs Destroy Abilities.

Here is the situation.... if I have Gift of Nature in play, and my opponent has Retainer Kedryn in play. During my opponents turn, can they use Retainer Kedryn to attack one of my allies, and get around the Gift of Nature ability?

It would seem to me that Retainer Kedryn's ability is trigged on combat damage, which will happen, and then the "destroy ability" fires off... which is NOT combat damage, and will in fact destroy my ally regardless of the Gift of Nature ability.

    Is this true?

    Thanks for your input :)

You are correct.  Gift of the Nature only prevents your allies from being destroyed by fatal damage... fatal damage is defined as damage greater than or equal to the health of the character.  So Gift of the Nature does not protect your allies from being destroyed by an ability or power that simply destroys an ally without dealing damage.

This assessment is correct. Kedryn's triggered power directly destroys the ally, which will not be stopped by Gift of Nature.

There are 3 basic ways to destroy a character (I hope I'm not forgetting any).

    1. Fatal damage - This is when the character has at least 1 damage on them and that amount of damage is equal to or greater than their health. Allies with fatal damage are destroyed during pre-priority processing. This is the kind of destruction that Gift of Nature stops.

    2. 0 health - If a character's health is reduced to 0, they will be destroyed during pre-priority processing. Gift of Nature does not stop this.

    3. Direct destruction - Whenever a card tells you to outright destroy a character you do that when the link resolves. You don't wait for pre-priority processing. This is what Kedryn is doing and Gift of Nature does not stop it. In fact, that's what Gift of Nature's second power is doing.

    4. Physically rip up the card. (While this form of destruction won't actually affect the character in question as far as the game goes, it's pretty much guaranteed to get a rise out of your opponent)

I just remembered that a uniqueness violation can cause a character to be destroyed. This will also not be stopped by Gift of Nature.

Re: Gift of Nature + Retainer Kedryn: Destroy vs Fatal Damage?

Perfect!! Thank you all for the responses...

But now I have a question... according to #2 above, if someone reduces one of my allies to exactly 0 health, they would be destroyed regardless of the Gift of Nature ability? So Fatal Damage is only beyond 0? That seems strange to me that the Gift of Nature wouldn't stop someone going to 0 health, which I assume is "fatal damage".

    What do you think?

Re: Gift of Nature + Retainer Kedryn: Destroy vs Fatal Damage?

Fatal Damage occurs when the damage is equal to, or greater than, the health of the Ally.
    Comp Rules:
Fatal Damage (404.2): Damage on a character greater than or equal to its health. A character is dealt fatal damage if it has damage greater than or equal to its health after that damage is dealt. “More than fatal damage” is damage in excess of a character’s health.

I see.... I guess i'm confused at what GPFault is saying up above about "health being reduced to 0" will not be stopped by Gift of Nature. What does GP mean by that?

If an ally has 0 health, but no damage, they do not have fatal damage, but they will still be destroyed. Since the destruction is not due to fatal damage, Gift of Nature won't stop that destruction.
    Comprehensive Rules:
409.6a All characters with 0 health are destroyed. This is different from destruction by fatal damage.

He means when an ally gains a reduction to their actual health, via effects like Withering Shout.
