    Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

    Ring of Invincibility

... Target ally has Invicible this turn. (It can't leave play, be targeted, or be dealt damage).

Can you redirect damage to Dethvir if he can't be dealt damage?

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

Well, since you can use United Front, and have the next dmg redirected to him so he doesnt take any dmg, id say yes.

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

Hmm good question. I'm going to say no you can't redirect damage to Dethvir after you've used Ring of Invicibility. Since damage can't be dealt to Dethvir, I don't see how you can redirect it to him using his effect.

Here's the last part to Dethvir's text. "If another hero or ally in your party would be dealt damage, you may have it be dealt to Dethvir instead." I don't see how you can do this effect with Ring of Invicibility.

This scenario is much different than if you played United Front. (which only prevents damage).

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

Dethvir's Power is considered a replacement modifier.  Replacement modifiers have the following rules stipulation:

716.1d     A replacement modifier replaces the specified event even if one or more of the modified events can’t be done.

Therefore, you could use Dethvir's power even though he cannot be dealt damage.

Could Aragon or a high level judge give me a ruling on this please?

I think ferrier13 hit the nail on the head with the correct ruling.

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

Both of those involve costs. If the action required by the cost was not actually taken (putting 2 damage, destroying Magnus) then the cost wasn't actually paid.

This would be the same as if you were affected by a modifier that said you couldn't exhaust your resources.

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

Isn't there a specific rule that doesn't allow putting more damage on a character than its health?

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

    1) Can anybody link the ring of invincibility? I cannot find it anywhere.
    2) In first post is written "or be dealt damage" and since deal damage and put damage are IMHO different things. You can use acolyte kemistra powers.

If there isn't a rule that prevents this action, then I'd like to be the first to bring up a new infinite combo.  Ring of Invincibility + Heartless + any ally with the Berserking keyword.  (i.e. Jee'zee)

Anyone want to put the kabosh on this combo by citing the ruling that Tonier is referring to?

I've got the Jee'zee Jesus Lionar deck w/ Keys to the Armory already built in MWS and ready to go for Realm Champs... if this is actually a legal combo. ;)

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

    Comprehensive Rules v3.21:
405.3 Damage can be either dealt to or put on a character. If a modifier adds damage to a character but doesn’t specify that it deals that damage, that damage is put on that character. Damage that would be dealt to a character can be replaced and/or prevented (717). Damage that would be put on a character can’t be replaced or prevented. A character can be dealt damage in excess of its health, but damage can’t be put on a character in excess of its health. If a modifier says to put more than fatal damage on a character, put exactly fatal damage on that character.
Sorry to have killed your jank deck idea :)

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

No worries. I actually thought I had remembered reading that rule, but was fun to see how it might have played out.  Turn 5 kill wasn't too difficult to pull off, but the deck was really boring and the epitome of a 1-trick pony, so believe me when I say that I'm actually glad it won't ever see the light of day!

Re: Ring of Invincibility and Dethvir

Was that rule about putting damage added recently?  There was a deck in 2007 nats/worlds that used Barak the Shamed, Berserker Rage, and Ring of the Unliving to do infinite damage, but it wouldn't have worked if the rule existed...
