Most Asked Question: Evasion, Transferable, Valid Target, Backup and substitute

    Hello,

I play in a store back here in Brazil and our VS community raise this bunch of questions about some abilities that must be clarified by someone.

    1 - EVASION:

When this ability is used, you stun the character to evade the attack... but what happen to the attacker and the plot twisted spent by the attacker?

Example: The Thing target Ricochet for an attack, but he is in support row and protected by Ezekiel in front Row. The thing use Flying Kick  from resource row (to pass over Ezekiel) and One Two punch (to hit hard on Ricochet) from the hand. The defending player decides to use Evasion. As the abilities said, Ricochet is Stuned (stun endurance loss happen as normal) but What happen to Thing and the plot twisted used by him?

2 -  FLIGHT, RANGE AND LEGALITY OF ATTACK:

What happen when a plot twist or a payment power cancel flight or Range from a attacker against a foe that cannot be attacked if the agressor doesn´t had those traits in the middle of an attack? The attacker must be ready again and choose another target OR he is exausted as normal and lost this attack?

    3 - BACKUP AND SUBSTITUTE:

If I had a character with Backup that gives Substitute in the build phase, this substituted character enter play exausted OR he will be ready? And what happen if this new character in play had Substitute printed on him... Can I use this substitute ability again? The substitute ability had a cumulative effect? All effects activated by Backup abilities remain valid this turn after those characters are substituted? I ask this because all Marvel Defenders had this Substitute / Backup abilities printed on them and many of them must use it on Build phase.

    4 - TRANSFERABLE ITENS:

Transferable itens can be moved from one character to another to avoid been KO or removed from game by plot twist or payment power?

5 - EQUIPMENTS AND STUNNED CHARACTERS:

The effect from equipment equiped on character are still active after the user is stunned?

Spidermobile gives spiderfriends affiliation and negate effects played on character equipped with it but this ability still apply when the driver is stunned?

Example: Morbius driving the spidermobile was stunned by Daredevil and Punisher want to use his activated power to KO character stunned as soon as possible... But Morbius is driving Spidermobile, so he goes to KO pile or he cannot be KO because of spidermobile?

    Thanks for the help,

    Alessandro Franzen

You still resolve the attack as normal. Any plot twists that have been played will go to the KO pile just like they normally would. when the attack actually resolves, there is no defender so the attacker would ready and can declare another attack.

    alessandrofranzen:

2 -  FLIGHT, RANGE AND LEGALITY OF ATTACK:

What happen when a plot twist or a payment power cancel flight or Range from a attacker against a foe that cannot be attacked if the agressor doesn´t had those traits in the middle of an attack? The attacker must be ready again and choose another target OR he is exausted as normal and lost this attack?

If the attack was already legal (meaning the attacker has exhausted) then the attack continues. If flight or range is removed before the attack is legal, then the attack is not legal and would never have exhausted to begin with. Keep in mind you must give your opponent a chance to make the attack play something before the attack is legal but after it has been proposed. (so if you declare an exhaust at the same time and they make it illegal you will back up the game to before you exhausted the attacker).

    alessandrofranzen:

I ask this because all Marvel Defenders had this Substitute / Backup abilities printed on them and many of them must use it on Build phase.

Backup just means the ability can only be played during the build phase. So as long as you can pay the activation cost you can play the backup power.

Substitute requires that the old character be the same cost or lower than the new character as long as you meet that condition you can continue to substitute. So in theory you make play a backup power, then substitute that character for another character with a backup power and play that power, then substitute again. As long as you have substitute characters that are equal or lower cost and you can afford to pay the backup power's cost.

    alessandrofranzen:

    4 - TRANSFERABLE ITENS:

Transferable itens can be moved from one character to another to avoid been KO or removed from game by plot twist or payment power?

You can only transfer 'transferable' equipment during the formation step after all the characters have finished moving. So unless your opponent is trying KO the character during that step, you can not do that (they would be foolish to do time it that way so it will not be likely to happen).

    alessandrofranzen:

5 - EQUIPMENTS AND STUNNED CHARACTERS:

The effect from equipment equiped on character are still active after the user is stunned?

Spidermobile gives spiderfriends affiliation and negate effects played on character equipped with it but this ability still apply when the driver is stunned?

Equipment adds to a character's text box and since a character's text is blank when they are stunned, so is the equipment.

So for Evasion, the attacker character ready after this ability is used and must choose another target.

For Backup and Substitute, you doesn´t said if all backup powers still cumulative after 3 substitute actions and backup activated power are used each time...

Thank you a for this input once again.

    All my best regards,

Re: Most Asked Question: Evasion, Transferable, Valid Target, Backup and substitute

Since it wasn't mentioned, with regard to the Backup + Substitute question don't forget that in order to substitute a character the character you remove must be ready, meaning if the Backup power is an activated effect you will not be able to substitute the character out once it has been used unless you ready it by another effect.

Re: Most Asked Question: Evasion, Transferable, Valid Target, Backup and substitute

    Hmmm... Curious.

Can you check this rule about substitute/Backup and where I can find it? A friend of mine want a official confirmation before a tournament that will happen this sunday...

Can I use substitute (think Teen Titans) in combat phase?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Most Asked Question: Evasion, Transferable, Valid Target, Backup and substitute

It is in the comprehensive rules or in the FAQ Summary of Terms file.

The exact text for the Substitute Keyword is:

Reveal this card >>> You may remove from the game a ready character you control with cost greater than or equal to the cost of this card. If you do, put this card into play. Use only if this card is in your hand and only during your recruit step.

So you can not do it during the combat phase.
