Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

Are there any rules or guidelines to go by to tell us what are continuous effects for Effect Monsters? Most monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh are effect monsters and many of them have several effects. Some of those effects use the chain (ignition, quick, and trigger) and other effects do not use the chain and are considered "continuous effects".  How do we tell which is which?

The FAQs, the Official Rules Forum (ask Curtis), and this link...  http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/COMMUNITY/forums/thread/965392.aspx .  Remeber some cards do have more than one type on effect.

    Enjoy the game

Breaker the Magical Warrior - 3 Effects, 3 Types.
1st Effect: Trigger Effect - Upon a Normal Summon mandatory place 1 Spell Counter on this card (Max 1).
2nd Effect: Ignition Effect - You can remove 1 Spell Counter to destroy 1 S/T on the field.
3rd Effect: Continuous - Increase the ATK of this card by 300 for each Spell Counter on this card.

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

OK then. It looks like the rule of thumb then comes from the ruling in which is states: "The effect starts when the face-up monster appears on the field, and ends once that monster is gone or is no longer face-up; there is no trigger for its activation." Therefore, effects like "This monster gains 300 attack points each times it battles" would be a trigger effect as it would not have those points when it is summoned. But an effect that says "This monster gains 300 attack points for every monster on the field" would be a continuous effect.

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

"When this card attacks an opponent's monster" or "When this card is attacked" can also be Continuous effects (Steamroid, Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger, Jain, etc)

I don't think those three cards are a good example.  None of the three follow the template of "When xxx, do yyy".  They all have If xxx, yyy which signifies continuous.

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

Do you all see what I mean. The rules on Continuous Monster card Effects are not clear. So Robert, are we saying that when a card reads when this happens then this happens that is an activated effect and when a card reads If this happens then this happens that is a continuous effect?

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

    In very broad strokes, yes.

"When this happens, do that effect."  That is a trigger effect.  The trigger is "this happens", the effect is "that effect".

The "if this card attacks" text usually signifies continuous.  For example:

The Ancient Gear Monsters (ruling from Ancient Gear Beast, logic says it applies to the rest with the same effect)
Black Veloci / Topaz Tiger / Jain
    Etoile Cyber
Evil Hero Wild Cyclone (same wording as Ancient Gears)
    Destiny Hero - Dasher
    Elemental Hero Darkbright
Giant Orc et al (GAF, GEAF, Spear Dragon, etc)

    But to show not always:

Drillroid / Ehren / Mystic Swordsman Family / Neo-Spacian Grand Mole / Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke
Chainsaw Insect (effect activates, therefore not continuous)
    B.E.S. monsters (again, activates)
    Majestic Mech - Senku
    Memory Crusher
    Nanobreker

And then those we don't have a ruling for:
    Disc Fighter
    disciple of the forbidden spell

Those aren't all of them, of course.  Take from it what you will.  I don't think either way can be taken as a sure-fire way to be able to tell what type of effect it is.

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

I'm not an advocate to look at the wording of cards to determine something since this is Yugioh and Yugioh is just too random. However...

Most effects that are of 1 type do not make sense if they are another type. Common sense usually works. Just use the definitions of trigger, ignition and continuous and see which one fits the best.

Take Breaker for example. Its first effect of getting a Spell Counter is obviously not an ignition effect (since it's doesn't get activated manually) and it makes no sense for it to be a continuous effect. As well most Yugioh effects are just the same thing printed on different ATK, levels and stuff or effects are just mixed and matched from a grab bag. This means that if you know the effects of a few cards, you can likely extrapolate a lot of them.

Then there are the oddities like Giant Orc, whose effect is a continuous effect as opposed to triggers. These basically have to be memorized. Luckily, most of these oddities share the same type of effect. For example, the Giant Orc type and Ancient Gear type effects are both under the same family of effects. Luckily these cards aren't widely played so not much of a biggie if not memorized.

I would hazard a guess that Disciple of the Forbidden Spell would be trigger, since most destruction effects based on attacking are triggers, like Sasuke Samurai and Drilloid.

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

OK, well that helps. If anyone else has any ideas on the subject, please chime in. Translations from Japanese to English and the evolution of the game tends to obscure the true intent of cards, unfortuneatly for us judges, making rulings hard and unclear at times, so any input would be helpfull.

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

Well isn't that just peachy? The first time I try to apply this reasoning to a ruling it blows up in my face. Ehren the Lightsworn Monk has the "If Then" text for when it attacks and is a trigger effect instead of a continuous effect. Tsui is right, you have to memorize the cards themselves. Now I know why I can't pass a level 2 test. Will this game ever have any logic to it, or are we going to just plod along without any dirrection or consistency?

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

counter fairies  being a continous effect  was  a surprise to me

so the effect of crystal beast choose  to send them to grave or to s/t zone is continous too?

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

Now heres a VERY good question that I think will boggle even Johanist's mind.

Continuous monster effects do not use the chain but when exactly do we "activate and resolve them"  I told my friend who uses counter faeries that inbetween chain links that he will apply and use the continuous effects such as "bountiful artemis" or "meltiel, sage of the sky".  as their effects are applied when a counter trap is activated (don't actually apply though until it resolves as then the card is considered to be successfully activated"

So the question or 2 is perhaps,  Do continuous monster effects like counter fairys ever have an "activation and resolution" thats offical by konami?

When exactly are continuous effects applied?  are they applied before continuous spell effects like "burden of the mighty" or continuous traps like "pole position" or do they go on a "continuous chain" that the turn player decides which of his continuous effects will apply first but don't actually use the chain.

Re: Effect Monsters - Rules for continuous effects?

A good starting point...   There are 3 kinds of Continuous effects.

Trigger-like continuous effects...    (Stumbling, Soul Absorbtion, etc.)

Ignition like Continuous effects...   (Royal Oppression, Pich-black Power Stone)

True Continuous effects....             (Bountiful Artimis, LLAB, Burden of the Almightyetc.)

Trigger-like and Ignition like continuous effects will start/use a chain.  A true continuous effect just happens.

Per Bountiful's rulings, Bountiful Artemis is a "true continuous effect, and will not use the chain and you draw the card immediately after the counter-trap resolves.

    Enjoy the game

    1468858:

A good starting point...   There are 3 kinds of Continuous effects.

    Actually not.

Trigger-like continuous effects...    (Stumbling, Soul Absorbtion, etc.)
Soul Absorption and Stumbling are Trigger Effects of Continuous Spell cards, not Trigger Effects of Countuous Effects.

Ignition like Continuous effects...   (Royal Oppression, Pich-black Power Stone)
Neither of these are "continuous effects" both of these are Ignition Effects of continuous Trap Cards.

True Continuous effects....             (Bountiful Artimis, LLAB, Burden of the Almightyetc.)
These effects are the only "real" Continuous Effects.

Continuous effects include: DNA Surgery, DNA Transplant, Burden of the Mighty, The A. Forces, Bountiful Artemis, The Calculator, Level Limit - Area B, Level Limit - Area A, Final Attack Orders, Skill Drain, Royal Decree, Command Knight, Magician's Valkyria, Goblin King, Chaos Necromancer, etc.

Continuous Effects, much like Exodia's win-condition will activate and resolve between links of a chain, and after a chain or summon occurs before a response window can be initiated.

I will - Once Again - Be using "The Calculator" as an example.

Calculator is alone on the field.  You summon Another Calculator, now there are 2 monsters on the field level 4.

Summon Response Window Opens - Calculator is 1200. - Bottomless Trap Hole is not an option.
Link 1) Activate Metal Reflect Slime
Link 2) Opponent activates MST targeting said MRS
    Link 3) Activate 2nd MRS
    Link 4) Opponent doesn't respond - Activate 3rd MRS
    Resolve.

    Calculator is 1200
    Link 4) Summon MRS.
Calculators count 14 levels.  Changing attack to 4200.
    Link 3) Summon MRS.
Calculator count 24 levels.  Changing attack to 7200.
    Link 2) Destroy MRS.
Calculator count 24 levels.  Attack remains 7200.
    Link 1) Resolve W/o Effect
Calculator count 24 levels.  Attack remains 7200.
